If you didn't know, you would never suspect.

Number eight Fitzroy Square stood stoic and majestic, just one of dozens of tall, slim Georgian houses smiling benevolently down on the private gated garden in the centre. The roads and pavements, already spacious, felt vastly open due to the lack of traffic: Fitzroy Square was a peaceful, largely pedestrianised haven in central London, tucked away in Fitzrovia, land of the rich.

But first I had to get inside.

I had had a tip that next door, at number nine, there was building work happening, and indeed the facade was covered in scaffolding which had been swathed in a tasteful building wrap illustrating the architectural glories beneath. The entire fence line, a couple of metres from the wall, was fenced off with hoarding. I wondered if there was any sneaky way in through there.

I stood up and gathered my phone and
