Chapter 1

Bam! I felt it! A confusing , sharp, but dull pain at the back of my head. I didn’t know what had hit me, but I was going down. My world was moving in slow motion. There was no way I could stop it, I was going to hit the sidewalk. The South Oval of the campus became a blur of green and brown as my vision surveyed the trees around me. The sounds of students were muffled and distorted. My arms, my entire body refused to cooperate as I tried to grab the park bench nearest me. I was going down for the count. Seconds later it was all over.

I heard my name first Todd, Todd! Are you okay? Speak to me Todd!

Opening my eyes, there was Emily, staring down at me, a worried look on her face.

She was like an angel from above. Emerald green eyes mesmerizing me and at the same time peering into my soul. Which was a pretty good thing to be doing considering the fact that I had no interest in her other than being her best friend.

Hey dude are you alright?

What was this a strange new voice I've never heard before. I looked over to see where the voice was coming from. Beside Emily was a very tall well-built guy with broad shoulders and amazing marble brown eyes staring down at me.

My heart skipped a beat, or was it two beats? Either way this was definitely someone I could be interested in.

On the other hand, Emily didn't seem too happy to see the new guy, but that was nothing new. Emily and I had been friends forever. She was also quite the jealous type. Of course she also knew me well enough to know that she had every right to be jealous when it came to a guy this good looking.

Yes, he is fine, Emily told him.

She always did that. The mother hen thing. I wish she would let me speak for myself.

I reached back and touched the back of my head, checking for blood.

I guess marble eyes wasn’t going to let Emily get away with anything.

How do you know if you don’t let him answer his own questions?

I couldn't believe I was sitting here on the hard cold concrete sidewalk listening to them bicker about my health. I also had trouble understanding how that heart-stopping hunk could sound possessive of someone he had just met. And the fact it was me, that would have floored me, if I wasn’t already on the ground.

It all would have been entertaining in any other situation, but I wasn't in the mood right now. Plus there was blood on my fingertips.

Hey guys, I said, injured guy speaking now. Look at me! I am bleeding here.

Oh my God, Emily shouted, you're kidding me, right?

I held out my fingertips so both of them could see there was red on them.

Oh shit let's get you to see the nurse.

Emily wasn’t about to be usurped. She grabbed my elbow and yanked me up.

Don't you worry about it. I will take him to see the nurse," she said tersely.

What is your problem, girl? I'm just trying to help.

What do you mean you're trying to help? Aren't you the one that caused this problem in the first place!?

Now that little bit of information I hadn’t known before and it caught my attention. I looked over and asked, you did this to me?

He looked bashful, shy, and ashamed all at the same time.

It was an accident dude.

Why do you keep calling him dude? Emily asked.

I thought this little exchange was funny but I also thought I knew the reason why.

Probably because he doesn't know my name Emily stop being such a bitch.

What I can't believe you're taking his side over mine.

What do you mean taking sides I'm not taking anybody's side! I said.

You just stood up for him.

Excuse me are you two guys like a couple or something? Eyes said.

Maybe a little too quickly I shouted, no way!

The shock registered fast and clear on his face. He
