    Book 1: Reiki Made Easy

The Book of Positive Vibrations & Master Healing Attunement Secrets

    Preface

    H

ave you ever woken up in the morning feeling that something needs to change, but you’re not sure what, or even how to start? I often felt that something needed to change deep within myself, as well as having feelings of despair, and I spent hours wondering what was wrong with me. My life wasn’t terrible. I had a career, I had been in a steady relationship for some years with a busy social life on top of that. But despite all of this, I was unhappy. I felt stuck and most of all, I felt as if I was entirely alone. This may sound odd, especially as I was normally surrounded by people, but I felt isolated and I didn’t think anyone else could understand how I was feeling. When I did reach out to some of my friends and asked if they had ever felt similar, it was met with a resounding no, which reinforced the idea that there was something wrong with me.

In order to feel more alive, I started down a destructive path. I started to drink more. What would often be just a glass of wine after work turned into a bottle, and when that stopped working, I turned to vodka. My relationship with my partner started to sour and I was looking for a reason to start a fight every day. This was strange because I felt so alone even though I didn't want to be and I was just pushing everyone away. It wasn’t long until my partner had had enough and ended the relationship. My job was on the line as my performance had dropped dramatically and with all the red flags going up, I just couldn’t stop the self-destructive behavior. I started to have suicidal thoughts because I thought that would make everything better, and to be frank, I didn’t think anyone would miss me. My whole life, even when I was growing up, I had felt useless, as if I served no purpose. This was reinforced by my parents, who would consistently tell me that I would never amount to anything. I think it’s half the reason I stopped trying so hard in high school to change my life. Looking back, I realize that I had already given up all the way back then.

Little did I realize that I was depressed, and that I had buried every bit of hurt deep down inside of me for years. All the rejection, self-doubt, all the abuse (emotional and physical) that I had endured over the years was just swept under my emotional rug because I thought that was how you handled things. You don’t sit and wallow in self-pity, you put your big girl panties on, and get over it. Well, that was my thinking back then.

Reiki was introduced to me by one of my dearest friends, Linda, when she came over to visit. We hadn’t seen each other for over a year, but as I have come to learn, Reiki gives you what you need. At that point of my life, I needed to have a conversation with Linda that would lead me to my journey of self-discovery, self-love and healing. Linda had always been drawn to the esoteric teachings and always reminded me of a modern hippy, but when she started talking about how Reiki had opened up a whole new world for her, especially in helping her to discover her true voice, it resonated with me.

I was sitting on the edge of my seat, hanging on to every word that she was saying as finally, there was someone who was describing something similar to how I was feeling. Linda seemed as if she had it all together. She was glowing, and as I looked at her, I never would have imagined that she had gone through horrendous trauma as a child. After Linda had left, I sat in silence for a few minutes and for the first time in a very long time, I felt something. There was hope and a light at the end of the tunnel. I grabbed my laptop and started searching for any information I could find about Reiki. The more I read, the more the words seemed to come to life with a breath of fresh air. I started to listen to the stories of others whose life had been changed by Reiki, and I knew I wasn’t alone and that something could be done with how I was feeling on the inside, as well as the outside.

That was the evening that started my journey with Reiki. I can say that it has saved my life. I am the best version of myself today, because of the self-healing, self-love and Reiki energy that I have incorporated into my every day. I found my purpose through Reiki, and I have let go everything that no longer serves a purpose. Now I want to help you become the best version of you that you can be, free from pain, be it physical or emotional, and to live the best life you can. I want to provide you with the tools to help you start your journey towards yourself and your new life, and who knows, this may even lead to you becoming a Reiki Master.

    What Is Reiki?

    image5.jpg

Reiki is a healing technique where the Reiki Master (Reiki practitioner) will use an approach called the Usui System of Reiki, which is when the Reiki Master uses touch or what is often referred to as laying on hands on the person, and then uses the universal life energy to speed up the healing process, create a deep relaxation, reduce inflammation, as well as reduce stress. When the Reiki Master lays hands on you it is based on the idea that unseen energy flows through us, and this energy is at high frequency that is used to remove blockages and correct and align the body.

Reiki is about healing your body, allowing the energy to flow uninterrupted and helps to speed up the healing process and create harmony and balance within ourselves as well as around us (Biagetti, 2018).

It’s important to note that Reiki healing is not a massage. When you go for a massage it's more vigorous and the masseuse will manipulate the muscles to release the stress and tension. This isn’t done throughout the whole body unless you specifically request it. Reiki is gentle and unobtrusive as the practitioner's hands merely touch or hover over specific body parts. The practitioner will use between 12 and 20 hand positions during a session and this can vary slightly depending on the training traditions. Reiki treats the whole body, as well as having a natural and holistic approach to improving the wellbeing of the person. Reiki can complement an alternative treatment and is safe to be used in conjunction with conventional treatment. In fact, Reiki is being used in hospitals to help alleviate pain and to accelerate the patients’ healing process. It is also being taught in 800 hospitals across American (Lotus, n.d.).

Reiki is not a religious practice; it’s not associated with any religion and it’s also not New Age, as it has been practiced for over 100 years. You can practice any religion and practitioners don’t have to change their spiritual or religious beliefs when they become Reiki Masters.

    How Does Reiki Work?

Reiki is done while you lie on a table, without having to remove your clothing. As the Reiki Master works on you, you’ll start to notice your body responding to this energy and you can feel different sensations. These sensations are pleasant and they can be subtle or they can be palpable, as well as vary in temperature. You may experience one or more of the following sensations during a Reiki session:

    ●  coldness or warmth

    ●  tingling

    ●  throbbing

    ●  pins and needles

    ●  buzzing sound

    ●  numbness

You’ll also notice a difference in temperature of your practitioner's hands, as they can fluctuate from warm to cold and then back to warm. This is a result of the energy flowing through their hands. As your body accepts this energy you will start to feel more relaxed and you will notice that the tension is starting to leave your body. You may even start to yawn uncontrollably, which is also a natural reaction to the treatment as well as the feeling that you want to sleep. This feeling may increase throughout your session as your practitioner transmits soothing Reiki energy to release and calm the physical and emotional stress and tension.

It’s important to note that some people are more aware and in tune with their bodies and they may feel these sensations more strongly than others. Some people don’t feel anything during a Reiki session, but this doesn’t mean that the Reiki isn’t working. There have also been people who have become extremely aware of the position of a joint, which is also known as proprioception, or become aware of the joint movement, which is known as kinesthesia, while they’re having a Reiki session (Paterson, 2013).

    How Can Reiki Help Me?

Today, Reiki is being used by physical therapists, physicians and nurses—even chiropractors are integrating Reiki into their sessions (Newman, 2017). You can learn Reiki so that you can do it at home on yourself, on a loved one, or even your pet. So why should you incorporate Reiki into your life? I can tell you that there are many benefits to Reiki, but before I do, I want you to take a moment to try and remember the last time you felt rejuvenated. When was the last time you didn’t feel constantly tired? Shall we take it one step further? When you feel your shoulders, do you feel like they’re tight and pulled up to your ears? Our bodies will let us know when something is wrong, from poor posture to fluctuations in your voice when you’re speaking.

The more we ignore these signs, the more harm we do to ourselves. Our bodies will try and prompt us by aches and pains in the body. This could start out as stiffness in the shoulders and neck, turning into headaches and migraines. Maybe you’ve heard yourself say that you’re stressed. Maybe you’re feeling stuck, or like you need a change and working out at the gym or having a glass of wine doesn’t leave you feeling relieved like they have in the past. That’s when it’s time to look beneath the surface and get to the root of the problem.

We often neglect ourselves on one of the following levels:

    ●  physical

    ●  mental

    ●  emotional

    ●  spiritual

You’re not alone. Many people can relate to the above and once you are aware of what you are feeling, it won’t just go away. When you have a Reiki session, you will get the following benefits:

    ●  promotes and accelerates healing

    ●  restores balance

    ●  removes energy blockages

    ●  helps the body get rid of toxins

    ●  supports the immune system

    ●  reduces pain

    ●  releases tension and leaves you relaxed and revitalized

    ●  improves focus and clears the mind

    ●  helps you to sleep better

    ●  reduces depression

    ●  improves quality of life

    ●  helps with emotional cleansing

Reiki is a way of life that will empower you and help you to treat yourself with more kindness and care. By incorporating Reiki into your life, you’ll be creating harmony not only with yourself, but with everything around you and you’ll feel more connected. As energy blockages are removed, you’ll start to release everything that no longer serves a purpose to you. You’ll start to see that there is no purpose holding on to emotional baggage such as:

    ●  feelings of inadequacy from previous relations

    ●  guilt

    ●  fear

    ●  self-doubt

    ●  shame

    ●  anger

    ●  stress and worry

By letting go of all that, you will start to make space for the new energy, which is:

    ●  gratitude

    ●  self-love

    ●  joy

    ●  confidence

    ●  tranquility

    ●  forgiveness

    ●  mindfulness

    ●  connectedness

Reiki reminds our bodies to self-heal, to cleanse ourselves of useless energies while allowing the body to protect itself from exhaustion and boost the immune system. If you’re one of those people whose mind never stops overthinking and analyzing, Reiki will help you to practice and allow for your mind to go quiet. The positive energy will allow your mind to focus on the now and not to worry about what is going to happen in the future. We can’t control the future, only our reaction towards it, and this will also help you to understand others and to have positive reactions to circumstances and people.

When you incorporate Reiki into your life and have frequent sessions that allow for the consistent flow of unblocked energy, you’ll feel less stressed, your memory will be enhanced, your mood will be improved, as well as having less physical pain. You’ll also sleep better, which helps the body to rejuvenate cells and heal quicker.

By restoring balance to the body and realigning the chakras, the energy will flow freely and evenly throughout your body. This will allow for the benefits to bring about positive changes, both physically and psychologically. Don’t you think it’s time that you moved away from the unbalanced, stressful, and chaotic lifestyle to begin to re-energize yourself and reclaim your personal power, as well as building your confidence?

    Chapter 1: History of Reiki

Reiki master holds no lordly power over his or her students. A Reiki master is simply a person who has chosen to take the next step into mastership by accepting a greater level of responsibility for his or her life. He or she openly accepts the effects of causes which are self-created. By accepting this responsibility, the Reiki master is empowered to use specific processes to assist others in further empowering themselves.

    ―Paula Horan

    W

hen we delve into how Reiki came to be, we find that Reiki was founded on the understanding of the energy system of the body. The ideology behind Reiki was to improve the quality of life and enhance an individual’s health and wellbeing by restoring the balance of energy in the body. We also find that there are different traditions of Reiki that have been taught—we’ll be looking into those in more detail. The most common tradition of Reiki practiced today is Usui Reiki. It has been passed down for the last 100 years.

As we peel back the layers of history, we find that Reiki was passed down from the Reiki Master to the pupil personally. This was to ensure that the correct principles were taught and maintained. Over the years, as Reiki has gained traction and acceptance around the world, we have seen different subsets of Reiki emerge. We’ll also be taking a look at those in a bit more detail later.

Let’s go back in time to separate the facts from the myths.

    The Origins of Reiki

The word Reiki comes from the Japanese word rei which means universal life and ki which means energy.

Reiki’s origins have their roots firmly planted in Japan and while many have said that the founder was Dr. Mikao Usui, new research that has been discovered shows a style of Reiki that was being practiced in Japan as early as 1914 (International Center For Reiki Training, 2015). This style was developed by a Japanese therapist, Matiji Kawakami, who called it Reiki Ryoho. Kawakami would go on to publish his book which he titled Reiki Ryoho to Sono Koka which means Reiki Healing and Its Effects when translated to English. While researchers discovered this, they also found evidence that along with Reiki Ryoho, there were at least three other styles of Reiki that were being practiced and developed throughout Japan. They are:

    ●  Reikan Tonetsu Ryoho, which was created by Reikaku Ishinuki.

    ●  Senshinryu Reiki Ryoho, created by Kogetsu Matsubara.

    ●  Seido Reishojutsu, created by Reisen Oyama.

It would be fair to say that Dr. Usui rediscovered Reiki on that fateful day when he had his other-worldly experience at Kurama Yama, where it’s said that he had received the Reiki energy, from which Dr. Usui then developed his own style of Reiki, which he called: Usui Reiki Ryoho.

There has been speculation that Dr. Usui knew that there were other styles of Reiki and by calling it Usui Reiki Ryoho he was intentionally indicating that it was his style of Reiki. This has also led people to believe that there have been many Reiki healing systems and that their origins don’t come from Usui Reiki Ryoho. It’s also difficult to determine exactly how long Reiki has been around for, but most estimate that it’s been around for thousands of years. One of Dr. Usui’s students, Dr. Chujiro Hayashi, opened his own Reiki clinic at the prompting of Dr. Usui.

Dr. Chujiro Hayashi was meticulous with his records, noting which hand positions worked best with patients, as well as linking these positions to various conditions. He then went on to develop his own style of Reiki based on his findings and called this Reiki Ryoho Shinshin, or what we know as Guidelines for Reiki Healing Method. There was also a difference between how patients were treated at Dr. Usui’s clinic and Dr. Hayashi’s clinic. Typical Reiki sessions are done by having patients sit in a chair and this is how Dr. Usui would treat his patients, while Dr. Hayashi would treat his patient on a table. Dr. Hayashi would also have his patients treated by more than one practitioner at the same time, which led to how Reiki practices are shared today.

After World War II, Japan had changed and it was out of this change that Reiki would cross the seas and start a movement across the world. One of Dr. Hayashi’s patients by the name of Hawayo Takata (also known as Takata Sensei), had fallen sick soon after losing her sister and had been told that she’d have to undergo surgery at a hospital. Hawayo decided to go to the Reiki clinic instead, where she would receive two Reiki treatments a day for four months. Her health was restored and there wasn’t any need for surgery. She became awed by the healing power of Reiki and her journey officially began as a Reiki student, then becoming a Reiki Master.

She took this knowledge with her and opened several Reiki clinics in Hawaii, where she would treat patients in a similar style to the clinics of Dr. Hayashi and Dr. Usui (Downey, 2018). Takata didn’t stop there, as she felt that the world could use this knowledge. She traveled to the United States and various other countries to share her knowledge on how to heal. She also attributed her success as a healer to the frequency of the treatments done on her patients, as Takata would often do multiple treatments on her patients. She would also get her patients' families involved and teach Reiki to them so that they could continue with the treatments when the patient was home. Takata is a well-known healer, and even though it’s been 40 years since her passing, she is still held in high esteem.

    ––––––––

    Reiki in the Modern World

Reiki can never and will never belong to just one person or one organization. Reiki is the spiritual heritage of all humanity. – Dr. Mikao Usui.

Reiki has gained popularity and many people are now seeing the benefits of having healing sessions. It’s also now being widely accepted in the medical field among nurses, physicians, and physical therapists. In recent clinical studies, it was determined that there is evidence to show that Reiki isn’t a placebo effect. They found that out of the 13 studies, eight showed that Reiki was more effective than a placebo (McManus, 2017). Reiki has been shown to be safe and that it activates one of the three sections of the autonomic nervous system, known as the parasympathetic nervous system. This activation leads to the healing of the body and mind, with the potential for using Reiki treatments in the management of more chronic health conditions, especially for post-operative recovery.

Finally, Reiki has medical science to back up the benefits. With this newfound acceptance, hopefully we can create more awareness on the positive effects that Reiki has.

There has been a global shift as people seek to find a healthier way of living and have created huge amounts of awareness and a strong understanding of:

    ●  non-GMO products

    ●  gluten-free food

    ●  organic food

    ●  positive mindfulness

    ●  meditation

These as well as other health modules lead to one living a more balanced and fulfilling life. There’s a need that we have that drives us to seek out what is good for us. We live in a time where we create excuses to justify having an unhealthy lifestyle, and everything we see affirms this. Just think about our super-sized meals always being connected to work through multiple devices, and how you just never seem to have time to do anything. With so many things that affect us, from environmental factors to the physical and emotional, we're starting to understand that we can’t maintain optimal health without some support.

You can learn how to use Reiki on yourself to help you attune your body and clear the clutter that anxiety, anger, and shame leave behind. Reiki will keep you calm, grounded, and in the best headspace to make decisions. There are also Reiki communities that you can join that will help you get up to speed and so you can practice the Reiki techniques together. While there is a greater selection of Reiki styles to choose from now, Reiki still has a core focus on holistic health and wellness. Over the last decade, there have been Reiki Masters like William Rand and Kelly Rasmussen, who continue to make advancements and new developments as they work with Reiki energies.

While there is no regulation of Reiki Masters or practitioners in America, there are two Reiki regulatory bodies in the UK, which is why William Rand, who is a well-known Reiki Master, created Karuna® Reiki, which has been credited for regulating the practice of Reiki (Downey, 2018). William has been driving change for Reiki, as he also created a registration process with a detailed criteria outline for those who wanted to become practitioners of Karuna® Reiki. He has gone as far as developing an intensive process that can take up to four years for Reiki Masters to attain their license that will allow them to become Licensed Reiki Master Teachers. There are strict processes in place that the teachers have to maintain in order to keep their license, as well as ensure that you would receive only the best Reiki training that isn’t just consistent, but also verifiable.

As Reiki has evolved and as it becomes more widely accepted as a holistic health and wellness approach, Reiki practitioners are combining it with other practices such as yoga, meditation, life coaching, and massage therapies, which could include the use of crystals.

    Overview of the Reiki System

When you’re looking at having a Reiki session, it would be important to consider the type of Reiki you would be comfortable with. Reiki has the following six classifications:

    ●  Japanese Reiki styles

    ●  Western Reiki styles

    ●  Tibetan Reiki styles

    ●  Eastern Reiki styles

    ●  Seichem Reiki styles.

    ●  Traditional/non-traditional Reiki styles

As I started to research Reiki and saw that there were so many styles, I wondered how and if I would find a Reiki system that would work for me. There are approximately 1200 subsets of Reiki and they
