Stepbrother (The Novel ) - Harvey L. Frierson Jr.

    STEPBROTHER

    Chapter 1:

It was always a busy day in New York City, vehicles were moving slowly, businessmen, tourists and regular people drove across the Brooklyn bridge passing the East River to reach the city. The bridge was full of cars lined up as usual. One of the drivers stuck in traffic saw the set of red lights from the back of other cars from there. He groaned when he saw that there was little movement from the lane he was in. And so the impatient driver of a black SUV quickly changes lane to make a turn onto the FDR drive to get away from all the traffic. He was in a hurry to pick up a friend and cannot waste another minute waiting for cars to just move an inch every five minutes.

Jaden, a black man just about his late twenties driving the SUV hands his cellphone to Plugger Jones sitting on the passenger’s seat as he looks to his left to change lanes.

Man call this cumquat and tell him we will pick him up and take him to get his kid from school. I just want to talk. Since he was the one driving the car, he had his friend, Plugger, call the person they are going to pick up about his kid.

Plugger Jones, a younger black man in his twenties, reached for Jaden’s phone before leaning back to his seat and looking outside the window to watch the brake lights lit up every time the car stopped from the traffic, then he turned to Jaden.

What’s the code again? he asked and held the phone with both his hands.

Jaden rolled his eyes at his friend and changed the gear as he was getting out of traffic in a hurry. The year I was born, man. He reminded Plugger, a hint of irritation in his voice was given.

Plugger merely nods and types in the code to access Jaden's phone.

This nigga shorts you 240 grand and you just want to talk to him. That sounds unreal man! he said as he shook his head in doubt. His eyes were locked on the phone screen before looking up at Jaden a bit. Do I call him after we get out of this traffic or do I call—like, call him now?

Jaden, still looking straight at the windshield, grinned when he saw the opportunity to finally get out of traffic. He did not flinch and sped up to make it to the intersection right before the light turned red. There was no way he would waste another minute stuck there when there was another way out of it. Just call him! It's almost 3pm. I don’t want him to be late picking up his kid. He answered now that he got his focus back to Plugger.

Plugger backfired from the sudden speed and almost dropped the phone. Jaden saw in his peripheral vision that Plugger was catching the phone from his left then his right hand as it slipped. In the end, Plugger caught it with both his hands and leaned back to his seat now that he recovered from the sudden recoil.

You know, you are one cold son of a gun. Plugger says now that he got his composure back. Taking back what he said as he straps the seatbelt from his shoulder to his waist, securing himself to another possible beating the red light. Better safe than never.

Don’t you dare talk of my mother like that. If you want to stay breathing you better learn to hold your tongue and keep your mouth shut. Jaden retorts and saw shifted his gear to be able to make a sharp right turn and successfully cutting off the cars in front of him, getting himself a lot of honks from behind.

Jaden paid no mind to the honks of complaining from the other drivers. What he wanted right now was a fast travel to get to his target location. Plugger looked back to check on the cars that Jaden cut into, hoping that no one would road-rage on him for that.

Jaden saw that Plugger still hadn’t followed his instruction, so he cleared his throat to get Plugger’s attention. Make the call... unless you got my 240 grand. He says, still expressionless even after he broke a couple of rules in driving already, even almost causing an accident for that sharp turn he just did.

Plugger with his legs stiff of what might have been the end of his life is holding tightly from the seatbelt strap on his chest.

    "Dang nigga, that was
