Proposals - Anne Adair
Chapter 1
Nicole Russo stood at the corner of Fifth Avenue and 57 th Street gazing at the rings in the window under the iconic turquoise awning. A small bubble of excitement rose from her heart to her head. Another bubble followed, then another. She reached out and wrapped her fingertip around the edge of the window to hold herself steady.
Her girlfriend, Andi Winters, meant the world to her. Nicole was madly and truly in love with Andi. And she knew deep in her heart that Andi felt the same.
Nicole’s gaze darted from one engagement ring sparkling in the sunshine to another. She could propose to Andi.
The idea made Nicole light-headed. She spun around, leaned back against the wall and stared up at the sky.
What a brilliant idea. Nicole crossed her arms over her chest and give herself a hug. She was so happy, she heard violin music playing in her head. That had to be a sign, didn’t it?
Nicole glanced at the door of the store. No. She wouldn’t go in now. She needed to think and plan first. The violin music in her head turned sweeter. She smiled.
Yes. She was going to propose to the most wonderful woman in the whole world.
Nicole started walking, her steps bouncing in time with the music. Bubbles of happiness made her want to laugh.
She turned the corner and barely missed colliding with a crowd stopped on the sidewalk. Nicole looked as she walked around them to see what they were looking at. She saw a young man playing a violin. His case open at his feet with a few bills and coins in it.
Nicole laughed. She’d wondered how the music in her head could be so good. With a smile still on her face, she dug into her purse and pulled out some money. She slipped past a few people to drop the bills in the young man’s case.
He looked up at her and smiled as he slid his bow over the strings. For a moment, they locked gazes. Then his song changed. He began to play ‘A Time for Us’, the theme song from Romeo and Juliet. A song her mother loved.
Nicole put her hand over her heart and gave him a slight bow. She mouthed the words, thank you,
then walked away.
Papa had always told her to follow her heart and she would know when something was right.
As usual, Papa knew what he was talking about.
Chapter 2
The next morning , Nicole stood behind Andi and rested her chin on Andi’s shoulder. What's that?
Andi pulled some papers out of the safe in the bedroom wall. Her hand lightly brushed over the inlaid floral design on the end of a wooden box. Heirloom jewelry.
Nicole stood up on her toes for a better look over Andi's shoulder. Since a certain type of jewelry was on Nicole's mind, she was curious to see what was in the box.
Can I see?
Andi took a step back causing Nicole to dance to the side.
We don't have time. We'll miss the train.
Andi started to close the safe door.
Aw, come on. Let me see. Pretty please?
Nicole batted her eyelashes wildly.
Andi laughed at her just as Nicole knew she would. Andi swung the
