The late September morning was gorgeous, as every day in California promises to be. The noon sun was already beaming down with its warming rays, covering the hillsides with golden light. Daniel and Nicole had just finished a late breakfast on a Friday. Nicole was standing in front of their massive bay windows, looking across the valley, loving her life. Daniel took the day off work to celebrate the completion of a big software design project he had been working on all summer. They didn’t have much planned, just relaxing together over a three-day weekend.

Dan nodded and ran a comb through his graying hair, which struck Nicole as funny since his hair would soon be smashed flat in a snug helmet. They were in their early 60s and often talked about their retirement. No plans really, just ease back and enjoy their remaining years together. Their California home was right on the edge of Napa Valley. The heart of wine country.
Nicole changed from her spandex outfit to jeans and a T-shirt. She tied her shoulder length brunette hair back with an elastic band. Dan decided on jeans and a T-shirt as well. They laced up their hiking boots and slid on their lambskin leather jackets.
Wait a second,
said Nicole, let me grab my purse, in case we want to visit a little shop or two.
She slid her phone into an inner purse pocket and zipped it closed.
Of course,
Dan said. He knows
