Michael Kirk

My name is Michael Kirk and I have worked as a professional life coach for several years. Having helped a wide range of clients to work through their different struggles I want to share my experiences with others so they too can begin carving out a more satisfying life. I know the struggle because I have lived it. I wasn't always a life coach, I was a salesman when I left university. It was something I fell into, not what I had dreamed of doing. Before I knew it years had gone by and I was working hard, but my life was not a happy one. I was exhausted and facing burnout. It was only the recovery time for an injury that allowed me the time and space I needed to re-evaluate not only how satisfied I was with my work, but also how happy I was with my life. In that month that I was out of action I decided that I had to take a new direction. That was when I began working for a well known charity. Helping others was something that gave me renewed purpose, knowing that my hard work was genuinely going into helping someone who really needed a hand was exhilarating. I expected the feeling to wear off after a few months, but it didn't. Instead it got stronger and stronger and that was when I realised that looking out for others is my ultimate purpose. I was telling to one of my charges how I came to work for the charity that helped them when they asked me what I would like to do next. I admitted that I hadn't really thought about it. She and I had previously been discussing problems that she faced in her life. She suggested that I become a counsellor. It sparked something in me. I looked into counselling, but became taken with the idea of working for myself as a life coach. I have spent several years as a life coach and I am now eager to share my experiences.

    Day 1: Welcome

A better life. It’s so easy to say, isn’t it? I want to live a better life. We all want to live a better life with more of the things we enjoy, but also doing more of the things that we know we should, if only they weren’t so hard. But what is it exactly that makes a better life? How do you define a better life? Is it about taking more vacations? Is it about eating more of the right things? Is it about richer, deeper relationships with your loved ones? The answer is not always clear and there isn’t usually a single answer to the question: what is your idea of a better life? But that is one of the questions we are going to address in this book.

I say we because that is how I see this. I may have written this book, but a book is only the beginning of the journey. It is my hope that you will use these chapters as the first step on a journey that we will take together, and that you will continue to refer to this book for support, reassurance and guidance. However you personally define a better life, the process of building one will be subject to continual reevaluation as your priorities change, or your circumstances evolve, but the building blocks are all right here in this book.

As a professional life coach I know from my clients that the first steps can be daunting and it can be difficult to accept changes when they occur, but it can also be hard to instigate the changes yourself. Together we will look at how you can put yourself in the best position to make changes and make them stick, both in the short term and long term. The first half of this book deals with the mindset you need to adopt and helps you to become aware of habits so you have a deeper understanding and appreciation of what you are trying to achieve. The second part of this book actually gets into the nitty gritty of how you can actually make positive changes happen.

My hope is that you will be able to find the time to read at least a chapter each day. Each chapter will give you a fresh insight into the elements that you need to understand in order to build the better life that you have been looking for. Ultimately you will understand that a better life isn’t just about doing what you have always done and assuming that the right bits just fall into place. Since you are reading this book you already understand that things just don’t work out that way.

Anything that is important takes effort and commitment. That is why I am being completely transparent and telling you that while you can make immediate changes to make your life a better one, the process to fully transform your life may take longer and will always need fine tuning, because life changes. That’s just what it does, right? We are all individuals and no one has a master key, no one possesses a one-size-fits-all solution. It is up to each of us to work it out as individuals, and that is where this book will help you.

Unlike others, I do not profess to have all the answers, but what I do know is what has worked for me and what has helped me to give you a happier and more satisfying life. I truly believe that these tips will work to enhance your life and get things changing for the better. What has encouraged me to write this book is the current mood around the world. We are living through a time of great uncertainty where many are concerned about their lives, their families and the wider world. I realised that many people have been grappling with the same questions that I faced five or six years ago. Back then I found myself on the cusp of burning out at my job in sales. It wasn’t that I particularly disliked my job, but it wasn’t my dream. I didn’t love it but I’d been doing it for years, practically since I finished university. It was just something that I fell into, a job that was convenient, safe and easy, but not what I had been dreaming of while studying. Before I knew it it was ten years later and I had gone nowhere fast. I didn’t know why I was still there, other than it was familiar and comfortable.

As I said, I didn’t dislike my job in sales, at least not on the surface. However, subconsciously I felt myself getting more and more tired, no longer having the same energy
