Chapter One

Giddy Up, Surf Cowboys!

It’s another beautiful day in Bondi Finz-land, and the Finz are out catching waves in the surf. Wanting to have some fun while waiting for the next set, Flash pipes up with a bright idea for a game: impressions from movies!

Hey Bone, mate, what famous surf movie is this from? Flash tries out a deep American voice: ‘Back off, war child, seriously!’

Bone chuckles. "Ha ha! That’s Patrick Swayze, man, from the movie Point Break! A real surf classic!"

You got it, Bone! Flash throws him a shaka. Good one, mate! You earned the next wave, bro!

Bone nods with approval.

Syke joins in. I got one for you, me old mates. Who’s this? He clears his throat to get into the role. ‘If I say it’s safe to surf soldier, then it’s safe to surf!’

Arr, that’s an easy one, Syke. Sharp paddles closer. "It’s Robert Duvall from the movie Apocalypse Now! One of my favourite surf scenes! Arr." He karate chops the water.

Well done, Sharp, mate! You get the next wave after Bone! Flash smiles.

Alright, guys, how about this one then? MJ does her best to mimic a deep male voice. Every time the waves come up, he wants to take off. That’s what I get for hiring surfer labour.

Oh! Oh! Jazz gets excited, "I know this one MJ! It’s from Big Wednesday! Bear says that classic surf line!"

You got it, surf sister! You’ve earned the third wave in the set! MJ winks at Jazz.

Akaw! Jazz punches her fist to the sky.

Arr. Okay, guys, I have one. Who is this? Sharp puckers up his lips, kung fu chopping the air, readying himself to do his impression. The Surf-chi … is always good and big … on a … Wenz-dee!

The rest of the Finz scratch their fibreglass heads.

Syke shrugs his shoulders. "It’s you, man. You just said it, Sharp."

Sharp gives a broad, cheesy grin, stroking his moustache. A-ha! You got it, Syke, arr! It was indeed me! He kung fu chops his board.

They stare at each other, totally confused.

Flash rubs his chin. Can you do an impression of yourself, Sharp? I thought the idea was for the line to come from someone famous? A famous surf movie line?

Yeah, Sharp, mate. You’re not famous! Woody shrugs.

And it’s not even Wednesday. Jazz sighs.

Sharp ponders their words, stroking his moustache. Arr, not yet guys. But remember that one when I am famous. Ha! Arr! He stands up on his board, kicking out a roundhouse. Surf-fu kick! Arr! Remember that one too!

The Finz roll their eyes at Sharp. Still, the waves haven’t come. Flash glances down into the ocean, staring at his own reflection. He notices some beautiful, colourful fish swimming in formation directly underneath his board. One of the fish glances up and smiles at him, waving its fin. Flash waves back.

Hey, guys, wouldn’t it be cool to do some scuba? Flash asks, watching the colourful fish swim underneath him. I want to do some underwater exploration while the waves have died.

In the ocean below, beautiful Bondi’s marine life is busy going about their day.
