CHAPTER 1

SURF’S UP!

Rosie Chapman stood on the beach, dug her toes into the sand, and breathed in the ocean air. Her friends—Stella Chen, Jonah Harrison, and Camille Juma—were with her, talking about their plans for the summer. Rosie listened. Sort of.

Today was her last day of freedom, and she wanted to surf as many waves as she could. This afternoon, she was going to the airport with Aunt Hazel to pick up Flora Nedham, Rosie’s cousin. Flora was spending the next two weeks with them.

If it was any other cousin, Rosie would have been excited. But Flora? They had nothing in common. Rosie’s passion was surfing. Flora’s was knitting.
