OSCAR & ANDO

Oscar Langburne

Mum and Dad got me some birthday presents when I was about 11 and Craig's film Slow Dance was in amongst the Lego Star Wars stuff I was into. I'd surfed on and off for a while, but that movie inspired me to not give a shit what other people thought if I couldn't do turns and just went straight.

Then one day I was surfing Merewether and this guy paddled up and said hello. I was like, I freaked out and got all nervous and went in. I sent him a message later saying thanks for making my day. After that, Craig invited me to come surf with him and we started surfing and hanging out. Since then I've been really lucky to meet loads of rad people through Craig who I've learnt heaps from. I love it that they are doing things with an edge and style, from the edits and music they make to clothes, graphics, that kinda stuff. All in all it’s pretty cool that Craig and his mates have time for a young kid like me. He’s also unreal at math and history and helps me out with my schoolwork…just joking! But Craig has really helped me learn how to handle different situations, from the stuff you deal with at school, to music, positioning in the surf…pretty much everything. He’s also taught me it’s ok not to be a follower or give in to peer pressure.

It’s a smoky spring afternoon and my girlfriend Emily and I are at Pine Tree. The nearby Cape Le Grand National Park is ablaze and visibility is poor, but we have the beach to ourselves. And I’m surfing! Well, sort of. For months I’d endured an on-ag
