The Beginning of Contentions

Text: Rev 12: 7-9

Memory Verse: John 10:10

Introduction

There was war in heaven. Of course, that could be shocking to anyone. Could there be war in heaven? Yes, there was war. And that war was the beginning of all contentions.

God is the maker of all things, angels inclusive. But He gave freewill to every creature. That is, they have the freedom to make choices.

Who is the dragon? (serpent of old, called the devil and Satan) Eze. 28:12b

(a)   His original name was Lucifer – son of the morning Isa. 14:12-15

(b)   Full of perfection

(c)   Full of wisdom

(d)   Perfect in beauty

(e)   Had access to unlimited wealth

(f)    Music was a part of him

(g)   Anointed by God

(h)   Cherub that covered the mountain or throne of God

(i)     Walked back and forth in the midst of fiery stones (fire at the feet of God)

(j)     Was in Eden, the garden of God (could be to dwell or visit)

General information

He had his own angels. A school of thought believed that one-third (⅓) of the angels were under his control as an archangel. It is believed also that Michael was his contemporary and had another third of the angels under his control too. Rev. 12:3-4

Note

1)     Lucifer and Michael are believed to be the cherubs anointed to cover the throne of God with their wings – specially anointed to be better and stronger than other angels so they were called archangels.

2)     Apparently, there must have been at least a third archangel, but the Bible did not mention his name. I mean who coordinates the third (⅓) of the angels. There may even have been many more.

3)     Angels are powerful. 2 of them destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah. Human beings always lose their strength when they meet angels. E.g. Daniel, the soldiers at the tomb of Jesus etc.

4)     Lucifer (and Michael) were different from the others (a) He carried the presence of God more (b) saw God more closely at all times (c) had advantageous information of happenings in the throne of God (d) By virtue of his posting, he also receives God’s honour with Him.

5)     There is a hierarchy among angels e.g. there was a prince of Persia who could hold Gabriel captive until a stronger angel Michael came to deliver him. That Prince of Persia is not Lucifer.

Conclusion

Lucifer accommodated a thought of pride in his heart and conceived the idea of becoming like God – the Most High. He wanted a status bigger than angel. He wanted to become like God, the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost. He was tired of his position; he wanted the position of God. Probably, not to eliminate God, but to become the No 4 of God.

Also, he communicated his desire with the angels with him and defiled them.

God instructed Michael who was his colleague to lead his own ⅓ of the angels (so that they could be equal in size, strength and number) to fight with them. That was the war in heaven. Michael won the war and Lucifer assumed the status of a dragon and his name was changed to devil and was cast down from heaven.

Meanwhile, God had pronounced judgment upon him, but the time of execution of the judgment is yet to come. However, the gifts of God are without repentance therefore he still holds his power, anointing and control. Therefore he has organised his followers into a strong formidable power to contend with God in another way

(1) By destroying man, the creation of God

(2) By luring them away from God and forcing them to serve him and

(3) Thus leading them to hell, which was made for him.

(4) To take control of the world from man whom God honoured with that.

Understanding Spiritual Warfare

Introduction

In the last study, we explained the beginning of contention. We saw how the devil fought (along with his angels) against Michael and his angels. But they lost and were cast down. Rev 12:12. When the devil saw that he lost the battle in heaven he was unhappy, because his new situation was worse than what it was before. He lost His (God’s) glory. The honour of covering the throne of God was no longer there. He had lost his position as one of the best 2 angels.

Unfortunately, God is never in a hurry to punish sinners. He had judged him and concluded about his punishment. But the date of judgement execution was yet to come.

1)     God has created a place for him in the grave, in the depths of the pit. He would never be in any high place again but in the pit below the earth. Isa. 14:15

2)     God would make fire to come out from him, to burn him forever (since a spirit cannot die)

3)     All his friends (who are like him) and his sympathisers would suffer the same fate. Eze. 28:18

4)     That is a summary of the beginning of contentions. But that is not the essence of contention.

The essence of contention

The devil, probably, did (and could) not challenge God’s judgement. But he
