Case 6 – Eyes Over the Playground

Like many times before, Mikasi sat on a footstool staring out of the window. He watched out of the south side, right beside the elevator. The others never could figure out why, but Mikasi knew. When the limousine carrying President Jeremiah Kroz arrived, Mikasi ran over to the elevator doors.

As the door opened, the white haired man blinked. What are you doing here?

Shrugging, Mikasi replied, I had a feeling you’d be here about now.

Ah, I’m sorry that the troubles have become so frequent. Jeremiah ruffled the young boy’s curls.

It’s not your fault, so don’t worry about it.

    Thank you. Is everyone here?

Uh huh. Mikasi ran from the elevator through the apartment. He’s here! Everyone come out!

Jeremiah chuckled as he walked to the lounge area. Sitting there, he waited for the whole family to arrive.

Sir, said Nartana. He sat down beside him. It’s good to see you. How may we be of service to you this time?

Good to see you too. Always to the point... Jeremiah chuckled. I want you to check out this afterschool program at Superior Care. A lot of children have gone missing over the last few months.

Why haven’t the police done anything?

Jeremiah shook his head. The only thing in common is that they come from Superior Care. The police are baffled at the scene. There are no signs of struggle or anything, they just vanish.

I see. Nartana frowned. I’ll send Mikasi.

Holding his plush kitten tightly to his chest, Mikasi rested his chin on the top of its head. That’s no good. We’ll figure out what’s going wrong there.

Jeremiah smiled. Thank you Mikasi. He leaned over and ruffled his curls. I knew I could count on you.

Mikasi smiled then ducked his head. I’ll do my best.

I know you will. Jeremiah stood. Alas, now I should get going. Let me know what you find.

    Nartana nodded. We will.

    Good, Jeremiah said and left.

Nartana turned to Mikasi. Are you sure you can do this?

    Mikasi nodded. I’m sure.

Okay then. Smiling at him, Nartana walked with Mikasi back to the kitchen. Sorry about that. He always seems to come right around the mealtime.

Too bad he doesn’t stay. Dusan shook his head. Oh well, we can keep our food budget on track.

So let’s eat! Dante waved his arm. He ran from the fridge to the table at the outside of the kitchen. In his arms he held bottles of milk. There was just one single serving for each of them.

Yeah, I’m starved. Kirabo added in. He carried a plate of biscuits to the table.

I agree. Nartana chuckled, walking over to the table. He helped Mikasi up into his booster seat. Let’s eat and enjoy the time we have together.

Right, said Mikasi. He picked up his bottle of milk. I’ll still be coming back for sleep though.

I’ll take you there, said Kirabo.

And I’ll bring you back, said Dante. The age difference won’t be all that noticeable that way.

Okay, said Mikasi. He drank his milk.

After dinner, Trevet made sure that Mikasi was properly enrolled in the afterschool program. So what are you going to do?

Shrugging, Mikasi led the way to his room. I don’t know. I suppose I’ll just go in like it’s my first day. He opened the door. His room was full of plush toys. Wading through them to his bed, he hopped up.

    That makes sense.

Mikasi smirked. But we’ll see how much the teachers and students underestimate me.

Trevet frowned. Don’t be too mean to them. Remember, just because they’re a certain age doesn’t mean they’re a certain way.

I know. Mikasi sighed. You don’t have to lecture me.

Trevet rubbed the back of his head. "Sorry. See? Even I who
