    HASSANA

Junpei sat across from my desk, glancing away bashfully as his father adjusted his tortoiseshell glasses and gazed sternly at the report I’d slid his way.

Do the other students struggle in English like Junpei?

Every student has strengths and weaknesses, I assured Mr. Miyamoto.

He raised an eyebrow, unimpressed by my response.

    What is Junpei’s strength, then?

He loves drawing and art. I hear good things from sensei Yoshiko.

    Mr. Miyamoto smiled.

My family is not a family of artists.

I understand but Junpei works very hard.

Not hard enough. He is ranked… fourth in the class?

Yes, but with a little work, I’m confident he’ll improve.

    Mr. Miyamoto snorted in disbelief.

Maybe I should take away his video games so he can spend more time on his work.

No! Junpei squealed in distress, clutching his father’s hand.

    His father smirked.

Better grades next time then? He asked his son.

Junpei turned bright red and nodded.

Good. Now I will speak to your teacher alone. Run along.

Junpei squirmed out of his chair and bounded towards the door, his long black hair brushing over his eyes as he escaped. Once we were alone, Mr. Miyamoto relaxed a little bit.

Thank you sensei, he said, in perfect English.

    Thank you?

To tell you the truth, Junpei’s English last year was far worse. The academy had a teacher from Korea who was horrible… just horrible.

He’s not the only one who struggled with Sensei Lee.

    Struggle is an understatement.

    Mr. Miyamoto smiled again.

May I be frank with you, Sensei Adeyemi?

    Please, call me Hassana.

Hassana… he said my name slowly, going over the unfamiliar sounds.

    Yes.

    Call me Kenji.

    Alright, Kenji.

Junpei has struggled since his mother’s death. He lives with my sister now and I don’t have much time to care for him.

I nodded. This issue wasn’t unusual amongst Japanese parents, especially not for those with students attending the academy. The International Academy of Tokyo boasted the wealthiest students in the city. Lawyers, bankers, real estate moguls and wealthy tech heirs all vied for spots at the school. Parents rarely had time for their children and I wasn’t surprised to hear Kenji suggest this.

If he struggles to practice alone, maybe there’s an after-school group he can join.

    Kenji nodded.

Tell me more about these after-school groups. Kasumi never mentioned them.

I’d met Kasumi before and only just learned she was Kenji’s sister rather than his wife. She usually picked Junpei up from school and usually attended more parent-teacher meetings where she wouldn’t say much, but scribbled notes furiously onto a pad with a stern expression on her face. I’d always had the impression Junpei both loved and feared her.

There’s an English club that meets Wednesdays and Fridays. Here.

I reached into my desk and pulled out a flyer, sliding it across the table to Kenji Miyamoto who peered through his glasses, scanning the paper.

    Hm.

What do you think? I asked with a broad smile.

Mr. Miyamoto removed his glasses and nodded.

    This is very good.

It’s an initiative I’ve been working on to help the students improve in English.

Good. English is a very important language. For business. For travel.

    I nodded.

    I couldn’t agree more.

It’s a shame I cannot take lessons to improve.

What are you talking about, your English is perfect!

Mr. Miyamoto grinned, No no. My accent is thick. I mix up words sometimes… It’s not perfect.

He pushed a few strands of his shoulder-length black hair out of his face and winked.

Perhaps I needed a teacher like you.

    You flatter me.

By next semester, Junpei will excel in English. I can guarantee it.

He pushed his chair away from my desk and stood, eyeing his watch.

Meeting with you has been a pleasure, Hassana.

He reached for my hand to shake it, but instead of shaking it, he pressed the back of my hand
