As the plane descended, I thought to myself how lucky I was.

One chapter of my adventure was closed, but perhaps in Rhineburg, another chapter would open…

When Madison landed in Rhineburg, she peered out the window and watched the scene unfolding below. Hans’ royal welcome involved secret service members, a few servants and then his sister, Emilia.

Emilia looked just like her brother, but she was more willowy than brawny. Her blonde hair was pulled back tightly, tugging on her edges as it twisted into a top knot. She wore no makeup except for rouge on her lips.

Hans sighed as he watched the scene unfolding.

What’s wrong? Madison asked.

Rhineburg. So stuffy.

Are you… nervous? Madison replied, chuckling at the thought of Hans having nerves.

My parents are formal. Rhineburg is traditional… I do not want problems with my choices.

What does that mean? Madison questioned.

Hans didn’t respond. He replied when he pleased and if he didn’t want to give answers, nothing could change his mind.

Win tapped her shoulder. Madison whipped around.

Nervous? Win whispered.

Yes, she replied.

He chuckled, Don’t. Life is a more relaxed in Rhineburg.

Why is Hans so worried?

Win chuckled, His parents.

Madison’s eyes widened.

I thought you said it was more relaxed!

The culture, Win explained, Why, yes. But the monarchs expect a lot of their children.

Including Hans?

Win nodded, Yes.

Hans grumbled, I can hear you, you know.

Diego smiled, Hans discomfort drawing a chuckle out of him.

It’s funny to watch you squirm, Diego chortled in his thick, Spanish accent.

We should head to Paracito next and see how much you laugh.

That shut Diego up. The pilot and accompanying assistant on the flight lowered the stairs and gave permission to descend.

Come, Win called to Madison, linking arms with her as they descend.

Hans descended first and was met with bowed heads and a respectful averted gaze. Madison, Win and Diego experienced the same. Diego waved and grunted his greetings. Win was the more polished and diplomatic, so Madison settled into his grasp with ease. In Rhineburg, accompanying the royal princes meant Madison was stepping into a far different world than even Saltwick.

At Saltwick, she’d arrived as a journalist. She’d been an honored guest but there’s a difference between an honored guest and a guest of a prince.

A tall man in a suit greeted Hans with a smile.
