    The Mafia’s Girl

    Chapter 1

When someone treats you right, you should remain loyal to them. That’s what Dominic’s father, Don Stefano, taught him. Dominic was proud to be his father’s son, and was very happy when his mother had his brother, Michael.

The two were very close growing up, but soon after Michael turned eighteen, a rival family who took offense to Don Stefano opened fire on the boys. Dominic was hit in the shoulder, but Michael took a bullet in the stomach. By the time they could get the young Michael De Fiore to any sort of medical attention, he was already breathing his last breaths.

The act of violence began a turf war between the two families for four years. It did not seem there was going to be any end in sight until Don Stefano called for a meeting with the head of the Salvatore family. What they thought was a meeting for a truce was actually the opportunity Don Stefano needed to put a bullet in the man who had caused his youngest son to be killed. Without Antonio Salvatore at the head, the Salvatore family weakened more than anyone thought, and soon after, in the summer of 1972, the war ended.

It was a week after the end of the war, and Don Stefano had claimed the Salvatore family’s best nightclub, Swallows, as their new base of operations. Dominic was in attendance, of course; looking at a painting of his brother. Since Michael’s death, Don Stefano looked at Dominic, now 28, as the heir to his criminal empire. He’d groomed him, taught him how to be a leader and even set him up with a job managing a few of his fronts. It was for this reason that he was the guest of honor tonight. Dominic was going to be in charge of Swallows, which would act as the main thoroughfare for many of the De Fiore family’s drug dealings. This was, in a way, his final test from his father. And though he was nervous, he welcomed the challenge.

As he looked up at the painting of his brother, Dominic felt a soft slender hand slip into his. He smirked as he turned to see the raven-haired beauty whom he called his fiancée. Ariana Giovani was the daughter of a close family friend and had known Dominic for years. The two seemed destined to be with one another and they did not fight it. Like some medieval royal family, their two families would be united and all the power and influence they held would go to their children.

Today’s the big day, she said. Ariana had chosen to wear a tight fitting black dress with a plunging neck line. Dominic looked forward to taking that off of her later on tonight.

He smiled at her. Second biggest day, he said. The first will be next month. Ariana giggled and leaned up to kiss her lover. She hugged his arm and sighed heavily. Ariana was very romantic. She told him many times that she couldn’t possibly see any other future without him by her side.

Dominic was still looking at his brother’s portrait, sending up a silent prayer for him when his father approached with his mother Isabel, and their entourage. Well isn’t that the most beautiful fucking sight you ever seen? asked his father, Don Stefano.

Isabel lightly punched him in the arm. Don’t start swearing! she said. He’s going to get bad habits.

Dominic chuckled. I think it’s a little too let for that, ma,
