    Catching the Billionaire’s Heart

    Chapter 1

Sabrina paced back and forth in the grand foyer of her employer’s mansion. On any other day, she would have loved the smell of the old manor. It smelled of books that had not been opened in years and the conglomeration of smells that had been mixed together since the doors to the manor were pushed open. Today, however, was different. The smells just reminded her how old her employer was and that just upstairs he was getting ready to pass on.

She tried to keep herself busy on her tablet. She watched the stock prices fluctuate and kept in constant communication with the board who was trying to learn what was happening at the manor. Sabrina felt herself going mad as she sent the same response over and over again. Surely, the board was sitting next to each other and could tell the others what she said. But Sabrina knew better. The vultures were out and were waiting to hear who would be next on the throne when her employer, Arthur McEniry, finally passed away from his cancer.

Ms. Jones? asked a voice from above. Sabrina sent her email and looked up. Arthur’s physician stood at the foot of the stairs with a grave look on his face. He had told her a few hours ago that there was still plenty of time before Arthur finally lost the battle with his cancer, but the look on his face told her otherwise. Sabrina ignored the buzz of her phone and left it downstairs as she walked up to meet the doctor.

Her feet felt like lead and her thighs burned as she tried to brace herself for the terrible news. Arthur was like a father to her. He took her under his wing while she toiled away in an internship and never looked back. Not that there was much to look back on. Sabrina was an orphan after her mother threw her out of the house when she was only four. Her father was nowhere to be seen so she could only assume that he was busy fathering more children or dead and gone. When Arthur heard her story, he gave her an advance so large that she was able to create a new persona for herself. She was no longer Sabrina: the troubled ghetto youth. She was now Sabrina: right hand woman to the most powerful businessman the world would ever know.

This was why the prospect of Arthur being dead frightened her so much. Yeah, it was selfish, but years of bouncing from foster home to foster home convinced her that she wanted a much better life than what she currently had.

Sabrina reached the top of the staircase and looked the doctor right in the eyes. How is he? she asked.

The doctor gave a great sigh. It’s not good, Ms. Jones, he said. Arthur is doing well for the moment, but it will be any day now that he finally passes.

Sabrina fought back tears and took a deep breath. She was not ready and some higher power was telling her to prepare herself. Alright, she said. So what do we do now?

The doctor sighed again and as he took his glasses off to clean them. I would start making plans, Ms. Jones, he said. Arthur is extraordinary man, but even he can’t cheat death. With that, the doctor took his bag and showed himself out. Sabrina moved to the door before hesitantly pushing it open.

The beep, beep of the heart monitor felt so loud
