For all who struggle with addictions
and life-controlling habits
Introduction
WHAT IS AN ADDICTION? You have an addiction whenever you feel or believe you need something you do not actually need. When we become addicted to something that God did not design us to need, we are in bondage to that sinful thing. For example, you cannot be addicted to breathing because God designed you to need air, but you can be addicted to sweets, pornography, or alcohol because God did not design you to need these things. The good news is that God can give you power over any sin so you may be free from addiction for the rest of your life. This is the purpose of Faith Addiction Recovery.
The worst problem in the world is sin. When sin has a controlling influence on your life, you lose your freedom first. Eventually you may lose your family, and you may finally lose your physical well-being. Ultimately, addiction to any sin brings death (James 1:15). We believe the Bible has the answers to all our questions and the solutions to all our problems. The 10 Principles of Faith Addiction Recovery in this book are taken from the Bible and are designed to lead you out of bondage to sin and into the freedom and victory that is only found through faith in Jesus Christ (1 John 5:4).
Life without God is not supposed to make sense. God has designed you for a fulfilling relationship with Him through his Son, Jesus Christ. People look for fulfillment, happiness, pleasure, and meaning in the things of this world. Some turn to drugs or alcohol, others turn to cigarettes or pornography, still others try to find what they are looking for in food or video games or sports or music—the list is endless. But none of these things will ever satisfy the longing of your soul for God. That’s the way he made you!
The principles found in this book will help you find your way out of addiction to any sin. If you are ready to commit yourself to God and find real fulfillment, joy, peace, and meaning in your life, then Faith Addiction Recovery is for you. If, however, you are just trying this as one more recovery program;
if you are just trying to clean up and get straight to please someone else; if you are not really serious about living in the wonderful liberty that your Creator designed for you, then Faith Addiction Recovery is not for you. God is serious about his love for you and his plan for your life and you must be serious about real success and freedom from addiction too. God can and God will help anyone who comes to him. Determine in your heart that you will learn these principles and apply them to yourself and God will set you free because Faith is the way to freedom from any addiction!
Principle 1 − GAP Truths
We believe the Bible has the answers to all our questions and the solutions to all our problems. In the Bible we find three eternal truths that must be kept in mind always. These truths will help us think correctly as we go about our lives. They are not a magic formula, they are just three things the Bible teaches that we must always keep in mind in order to see life as God sees it. These truths are easy to remember with the acronym: G-A-P.
God Is Always Good
The first GAP truth is: God is always good. As you move throughout your day, whether at work, shopping, or running errands, the truth that God is always good will help you to see the world and life as God does. When you are tempted to complain or get discouraged or angry, what you are really saying is that God is not good, or he is not being good to you at the moment. Your simple recognition of the fact that God is always good will help you see life as God does. It will make you thankful and joyful. It will help you to
