Practical Exercise – What kind of person are you?
Before we begin as a little icebreaker I want to play a little game. This is just for fun, not too serious so don’t stress.
First off, for all of you who like an occasional glass of champagne or if you drink white or red wine please stand in the left side of the room.
Now if you are more of a beer or spirits person please stand in the right side of the room.
Those who don’t drink alcohol but who love a nice cup of tea or coffee please move to the centre of the room.
This exercise actually tells me a lot about the type of person you are. Wine, beer, spirits, tea coffee drinkers - everyone who is now standing in the room is a legal drug user.
Yes, all of those substances are drugs. The only difference is they are legally regulated drugs. It is possible to overdose and die on all of those substances – granted tea maybe a little difficult but not impossible. But you are not likely to overdose on any of them because your drugs are legally regulated. The dosage is kept the same and is written on the label, ie the percentage of alcohol or with coffee the strain/strength
.
So fellow drug users let’s begin.
Bad Behavior - checklist
To determine whether or not your loved one’s behavior is having a negative impact on you and your life please read through the checklist and answer the questions honestly.
› Does your loved one steal cash, belongings or anything from you?
› Do they ’borrow’ your belongings and not return them or return them damaged?
› Do they expect you to pay for their expenses (bills, rent, car, fines)?
› Do they expect you to ‘save them’ from their own consequences, repercussions or outcomes?
› Do they expect you to fix problems for them?
› Do they refuse to take ‘No’ for an answer?
› Do they manipulate you into giving up your cash?
› Do they try and manipulate you into doing what they want?
› Do they deliberately embarrass you in public or in front of your friends, superiors or work colleagues to get their own way?
Answering yes to any of the questions above means that this is definitely the book for you.
Regardless of whether or not they use drugs, if your loved one steals, manipulates, cheats or cons you then this behavior qualifies as ‘Bad Behavior’.
Understanding Problematic Drug Use. The Wounded Healers Survival Guide - for Parent’s Dealing with Bad Behavior is particularly written for the parents of adult PWUD who are experiencing ‘bad behavior’ around drugs.
However, if you said no to all of the above questions and your loved one is actually;
› paying their way
› taking care of their life
› fulfilling their duties
› looking after their family
› taking care of their responsibilities
Then they have every right to partake in whatever pastime or recreational activity they chose – whether you like it or not.
Adults take responsibility for their lives, actions, and choices.
So regardless of the illegality of certain drugs, or how you feel about them or what you think you know, you would be better served reading:
When someone you love loves drugs. The Wounded Healers guide to Understanding Drug Use. This book is for anyone who wants to understand another person’s drug use.
**Warning** this book will challenge everything you think you know about ‘drugs, addiction and recovery’.
What can this book do for you? A quick reality check.
In one sentence... ...this book can help you stop the madness, fear and confusion around drugs.
I can guarantee that this book will make a huge difference to your situation and your mental health, but from the outset you need to understand and accept that regardless of what anybody tells you, it is impossible for YOU to force lasting change upon another human being or for you to successfully control their life, choices or behavior.
This book was not designed to give you more control over your loved one’s behavior but to show you how futile the illusion of control really is and to help you find more sustainable and practical ways of dealing with your loved one and their drug use.
Reality Check #1: It is not possible for you to ‘love them enough’ to make them change.
When it comes to influencing other people behavior, whether the underlying issue is drug use, gambling or bad behavior sometimes people want to know what they can do to ‘fix it’ or make it stop
. Often, they fall into a trap where they think that they can influence the other person’s behavior if they themselves just keep trying harder, or give more, work longer, or love stronger.
This kind of thinking is termed magical thinking
and is definitely part of ‘the madness’.
Reality Check # 2: Their life is their own and their choices are their own also.
You could literally spend your whole life controlling someone, forcing or manipulating them to live ‘your way’ and the second your back is turned they are off doing their own thing. If and when this person decides they want to change their life then they will but not a second before they themselves are ready.
Reality Check #3: None of us live in a vacuum.
While we cannot directly force change on anyone we have influence. Within all relationships, there are three spheres of influence – your life, their life and a third sphere - where the two spheres interconnect – the relationship.
