    1 - Friends

    Patsy and Susie were my two best friends in the whole world. They lived just down the road from me on a big sprawling dairy farm in upstate New York. The girls were sisters, but you would never guess it. Patsy was the oldest and had curly, auburn hair, freckles and a terrific giggle. She had a very creative imagination and sometimes she did stand-up comedy. Patsy was at the heart of every plot we hatched.

    I was an only child. I had long braids, clear blue eyes and a quick wit. I adored all living creatures and I liked to be in charge.

    Susie was a year younger than me with straight brown hair. She was thin, wiry and very smart. Susie could also be feisty. We fought often, only to make up quickly so there would be enough people to play One-base Softball - a game we had invented.

    During any given summer, the three of us traveled every inch of farm, creek and field near our homes; scheming, planning, dreaming and all the while growing up.

    Every summer started off the same. We would get up early, eat breakfast and listen to our Moms tell us each thing we were not allowed to do. Then we would race down Butterfly Road, meet in the middle and celebrate the joy of a summer off from school. It didn’t matter what we did next. It just didn’t get any better!!

    2 - Guess I’ll Go Eat Worms !

    I had always been fascinated by bugs and insects. At two, I filled my Red Flyer Wagon with woolly bear caterpillars and brought them into the kitchen. Mom was not delighted, but because I was really loved, she humored me in my quest for adventure. I believe she liked my curious nature and that helped her put up with critters in our house.
