FORCES OF NATURE

It’s a bit of a mixed bag this month. I’ll start with the new fantail doves, they have settled in nicely. With three pairs costing £50 a pair that’s one good thing. It will also be a long flight back home if they decide they don’t like living in Lincolnshire.

They get fed and checked every day. One of the larger ones still sat tight in one of the nest boxes, so we presumed she had eggs under her. The six-week quarantine period release date was fast approaching. This was the time the breeder of the birds from Wales had recommended they be kept shut in the loft while they got their bearings. So the great day arrived, and we all gathered at a distance around the recently opened bob holes. We had no idea how long it would take for them to pluck up the courage and make an entrance into the big, wide world. But we didn’t have to wait long. After ten minutes, the first one nervously stepped out. After another five minutes, all five were out and fluttering around the landing stage.

The sixth one was still sitting tight and wouldn’t leave the nest, so
