Ian spent his childhood on various farms and has lived on the same property since he was 13. When Ian left school at 15, he went to work on a local farm and remembers that he was keen on ploughing matches.
In the blood
“The family originally had a rented farm near Chester,” he said. “Things were difficult at the end of the Second World War, but my father got work as a farm manager. We eventually moved into a five-acre smallholding and have been here ever since. I’ve been driving tractors all my life, and even though I am in my eighties, I still take part in working days and ploughing matches.
“I was never keen on working with farm animals, I much preferred ploughing and driving tractors. I’ve driven any number of different machines over the years and have always liked Ford and Case.”
