Introduction

Hi, I’m Billy Chan, and you can skip this section if you’ve read one of my books before. If you haven’t, I have a few things to tell you.

First, I’m a book character. You’re going to help me make decisions in this book that will change my story. You can make safe or risky decisions, and in real life, you want to make safe decisions. In books, though, you can do what you want. Take as many risks as you want! I will be fine.

Second, I’m a chimera hunter. Chimeras are mythical creatures from other worlds that look like mixed up versions of regular animals. I’ve got the power to follow chimeras from our world back into their worlds. I don’t actually hunt them, though. Chimera hunters are rare, so even though I’m a little kid, the CIA calls me to help them sometimes with runaway chimeras.

I’m glad you’re here. Let’s go have an adventure!

Phone Calls

Mom’s phone rings during afternoon snack. I’ve just gotten home from school and it is Friday. I hope it’s the CIA with a new chimera mission.

But Mom looks very confused before putting the phone on speaker and setting it on the table next to my plate of cheese and crackers.

Hello? the caller shouts. I know I’ve heard this voice before, but I can’t figure out where.

Hi, I say.

Is this Billy?

Yes.

It’s me! Quirky!

Quirky, says Mom. You don’t have to shout.
