A Fate Befitting All Rare Creatures
By James Ferace
I'd just met her. Delicate green eyes, auburn hair. Gentle voice like a kindergarten teacher's. At first I didn't really think two ways about it, but our paths kept crossing. And every time I would notice more and more how inviting her smile was. How soft and pale the skin on her cheeks was as she lowered her glasses to speak to me and her eyes seemed to dance to life. Like seasons unfurling. That's when she mentioned a certain book she'd been looking for. Something she'd read in college and had fallen in love with and always wanted to read again. I'm not sure why I found myself hesitating. Knowing that I'd owned the book for years and my mental eye went right to the shelf it was perched on in my home. It was only a handful of months since she disappeared. I lost count of the days some time ago. I was ashamed of myself for doing so. I'm not entirely sure why, but there was always a feeling that dwell in me which knew that I was never going to see her again. When she was presumed dead, I wasn't the tiniest bit surprised. Morbid, I know, but I just couldn't see it any other way. In fact, she'd only been gone a week when I knew that was to be true. I had no reason to believe this...I just did. All sparks of her essence had gone from me. Becoming termites. A certain sinking in my spirit which grew
