    Dust Arsenal - James Ferace

    Dust Arsenal

    Dust Arsenal

    by James Ferace

When I was a child, I got caught in a sleeping bag. Late one evening in June. I still remember the way the sun looked outside and everything. The zipper broke and I started to panic, as I had strapped myself in pretty tightly, not realizing the consequences of doing such I wiggled and thrashed around to little avail. I was still trapped in there. Arms and legs entirely useless when they're pressed so hard against your body that you can barely breathe. The only part of your body you felt like you had any control over being your face. I kicked and lurched about, but all I could see was this large bulbous sack pulsing about, like a massive worm convulsing. Every second felt hotter than the previous and I began to wonder what my life would be like if I were never to free myself from that Nylon and Polyester cocoon. Eventually, my sister came and let me out. After laughing at me for a minute or two, of course. I'll never forget the feeling of finally being out of there for what felt like an eternity, but was really only several minutes. The freedom of being able to move about once again. Granted, I wasn't in any real danger, but I never forgot how frightened and dismayed that made me feel. Constricted. Imprisoned.

He leaned in. Close enough that I could smell his breath. Unpalatable, to say the least.

I don't know. His eyes look like they're on me, but...

It's all the same. Why don't we leave him alone for a little while?

Yeah...yeah, okay. But...maybe we should roll him over first. He looks like he's getting bed sores on this side.

    "I don't think
