    Detyrim - James Ferace

    Detyrim

    by James Ferace

I stood there looking at myself naked. The way I'd always seen myself. Tall, lanky, frail, shoulders hunched inward. Insecure. Awkward. Painfully. My eyes uncertain. Undefined chin. Hips slender. Like that of a woman. My rib cage pronounced. Penis almost nonexistent. You're not ugly. You're prosaic. I was told that once. I was hurt, offended, as anyone would be. But the more perspective I gained, the more I realized she was most likely right on the money. I was ineffectual. I didn't just blend into the wallpaper. I became the wallpaper. Practically having to light myself on fire to simply stand out in a crowd. Even then I might just make the flames glow a duller tone. People would look the other way, distracted by just about anything else. But I stood there in the soft reddish glow of the Chinese lanterns, just waiting for the knock on the door, looking myself over. I'd never been so nervous. I felt like I could vomit. But I knew there would be plenty of time for that afterwards. I had to pull myself together or I'd blow this whole thing. I didn't want to get thrown out. So I closed my eyes, swallowed hard, and breathed deep. *knock, knock* Jesus...can I do this?

Now listen to me. I'm gonna give you something, okay? But you have to promise to just keep it between us. All right?

Yeah...yeah... What is it? Trevor's eyes sparkled just a little more today. I couldn't tell if this was going to be something I'd be completely jazzed about or regret him even bringing up. He seemed to only have the two speeds. Close, caring friend and hard-pressure drug dealer. No in between. His hand dug around in his pocket
