S caggsville, Maryland. I used to see the sign for Scaggsville from the highway and wonder why anyone would live in a town with such an awful name. But, that is where, at age twenty-five, I found my puppy, Trapper (the dog against which all other dogs would be measured), and, thus, that is where it all started. My odyssey into the world of Golden Retrievers. They are, of course, a unique breed genetically, by definition. They are also unique, I believe, in another way. They have, almost, a physiologic need to be with humans. I honestly don’t think a Golden could survive without one or more human companions. It’s not that they don’t have the physical ability, the survival skills.
It’s more like they have such a huge reservoir and scale of similar emotions and thought patterns. (It is, most likely, also why they consider themselves to be lapdogs from when they are just puppies to when they are full grown, no matter how big they become.) Any Golden Retriever owner will tell you that their dog is so empathetic, that they seem to know what you’re thinking and/or what you need emotionally, something to make
