Valley of the Cookie Kingdom
Once upon a time there was a very happy little kingdom. The people lived in a sunny little valley in the middle of snowy peaked mountains, with just the right amount of rain for their orchards, and just the right amount of sun for their crops and meadows. Little waterfalls came down from the mountains. Streams flowed down through the mountain forests, flowed between the villages, and through the valley.
The King and Queen lived in a castle that was also a bakery. They were known as the Baker King and Baker Queen, because long ago they had decreed that their kingdom would use cookies for money. King Pfeffernüsse and Queen Madeline spent much of their time in their castle bakery, singing while they mixed cookie dough. They baked thousands of cookies, stacking them up on wooden platters. Then they would put their cookies in wooden chests in the huge cookie vault.
Sometimes King Pfeffernüsse and Queen Madeline would have big parties for visitors from far-off lands. Sometimes they would have big parties for the people in their kingdom. The King and Queen would provide cookies and milk for everyone, as well as music and performances.
The farmers loved gathering grain and honey, vanilla and chocolate, cinnamon and nutmeg. Unlike most places, the crops they harvested all grew on trees. When the farmers gathered the grain all they had to do was put sheets around the trees and let the breeze blow the grain down to them. Then the farmers would pick up the sheets and put them in the wagons.
The chickens and cows were happy too, because they had plenty of grass and seeds to eat, and green meadows grew all around them. In the Cookie Kingdom the chickens laid many eggs and the cows’ milk was rich.
Most villagers also made cookies for money in their own cottage ovens. In fact, the villagers made most of the things they needed. But, sometimes they would make cookies and take
