espite being part of an industry that has made by far the largest value-added contribution to New Zealand’s economy, dairy farmers constantly find themselves challenged on all fronts. Strident environmentalists, phenomenal cost hikes, difficulty in securing labour, long, hard hours and regulatory restrictions all play their part in making this the most difficult area in which to exist. Some farmers, feeling it’s all too hard, sell up to ever-waiting developers, some look at alternative production options for their land, and unfortunately others contribute to a suicide rate that should be our national shame.
