I want to acknowledge one of my many mentors in particular, Michael Neill, who has been so instrumental in helping me see what I’ve seen and now share with the world. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, Michael. I love you.
Introduction
T his is not a self -h elp book in the traditional sense. It contains no strategies, tools, techniques or how -t o ’s. It doesn’t have a neat and tidy structure either – no beginning, middle, or end. It is simply a series of musings, posted as a blog across a couple of years, from a woman in life’s third act.
That’s me, Kim, pushing 60 and living in England in the early part of the twenty-first century. The ideas in this book have been transformational for me and for hundreds of clients around the world. They did something to wake me up to the wonder and magnificence of being fully alive.
One criticism that could be made of this book is that it’s repetitive. I make no apology for this. Sometimes one metaphor or story really resonates for one person but doesn’t land at all for another. I see this all the time, both with my own learning and with my clients.
Because you and I aren’t having a face-to-face conversation here, I don’t know what will work best for you. Remember, this book was originally a blog. So see it as a smorgasbord. Keep what resonates with you and forget the rest.
I’d also recommend reading it one chapter at a time, so you can muse over each one and hold it up to the light as you carry on living your life. I’m pointing at universal truths here, but the only way to really get it
is to see the implications for your own life through insight (literally, sight from within).
I’m publishing it because many of the regular subscribers to my blog have asked me to, as they want to give it as a gift to family, colleagues, or friends. There is nothing you need to do after reading it, except maybe look in the direction I’m pointing and see what’s there.
Isn’t it ironic – fifty years of seeking, working, and trying, and it turns out to be this easy! I sincerely hope you see something truly valuable for yourself.
Yesterday I was clever, so I wanted to change the world.
Today, I am wise, so I am changing myself.—Rumi¹
Prologue
Coming Home
D o you remember towards the end of the film The Wizard of Oz ² when Dorothy pulls back the curtain and comes face to face with the great and powerful Oz? Except he’s not that great or powerful; he’s just a little man who’s busy pulling levers and turning wheels to keep the whole illusion going. Dorothy comes to a realization that allows her to come back home easily and effortlessly. All she has to do is click her heels. She has had the power all the time.
The understanding that I’m sharing now is sweeping the world. It’s most often called the Three Principles of Mind, Consciousness, and Thought – often shortened to the Three Principles or even 3Ps. Some people call it Clarity, or Clarity of Mind. I like to call it the He’Art of Thriving, because for me, it sums up what it means to truly thrive as a human being.
A simple understanding of the Three Principles was first articulated by a Scottish welder, Sydney Banks (1931–2009). Here’s how Banks describes what happened for him:
Over thirty-five years ago, I had a profound spiritual experience that revealed to me three, long lost, divine principles that are the foundation of all human experience.
I was an average working man, not searching for truth or wisdom or even aware of much beyond my day-to-day life. Why me? I’ll never know, but my life became a mystical journey where people suffering mental anguish of every kind came to hear me speak or read my books and quickly found mental health and true peace of mind. Now many of those same people, mental health professionals and lay people alike are helping thousands of others find the peace and happiness they have been searching for.
I’m one of those people.
The understanding is increasingly being shared with all sorts of groups, including businesspeople and prisoners, sports people and healthcare professionals, CEOs and children, and people suffering from mental ill-health or addictions. There have been several conferences globally just during 2016, each attracting many hundreds, and several TED talks. Books by practitioners working in the field are being published at the rate of two or three a month at the moment, and there are literally hundreds of webinars, seminars, and workshops happening every week in the UK.
It’s the fastest-growing approach to understanding infinite human potential on the planet right now, and it’s completely transformed my life as well as the lives of my clients. People are waking up to this understanding all over the world. Would you like to:
• really understand what makes you, and other people, tick?
• get in the game of life at a whole new level and make it easier to take action towards what’s most important to you?
• tap into the infinite well of your own wisdom, moment to moment?
• experience more joy, connection, well-being, and peace than you think is possible right now?
• discover your true confidence?
• see through the innocent illusions of stress, overwhelm, anxiety, and even depression?
• become even more authentic?
• transform your relationships, at work and at home?
• become an even better leader, coach, parent, or spouse?
• live more like children do, experiencing more fun, playfulness, and curiosity as you navigate the game of life?
That sounds like a lot as I write it! Maybe you’re thinking, Mmm … sounds too good to be true!
That was certainly my reaction when I first stumbled across this understanding in 2010.
If you’d have met me before 2010 when I first came across this understanding, I would have told you I already had a pretty wonderful life. I thought I’d pretty much cracked it. I had loving relationships, enough money, a successful business, work I thoroughly enjoyed, a beautiful home, and regular trips all over the world.
All I can say is that I had no idea what was on offer.
This understanding has allowed me to come home. Turns out home isn’t in Kansas, of course, but inside me. And inside
