If it were not for the aforementioned names, my life would not be what it is! Each of you has helped to shape, mold, build, encourage, push, and love me, while allowing me to share my dreams, ideas, and goals with you. First, to the woman I share my life with, thank you for pushing me to get this book done and encouraging me through some of my most difficult days. Thank you for blessing me with my two princesses. I am now blessed to have three wives (inside joke)!
To my two princesses: Wow, daddy loves you so very much, and there is nothing that I would not do to make you happy! I cried the days each of you was born, and I thank God for you every day. My life would not be complete without you.
To my mother who gave me life and who is the inspiration behind this book: I miss you so much, and I wish heaven had Facetime. You were the greatest mother ever, and I continue to push because you saw the greatest in me. You proved to me that it can be done.
To my grandmother Mary Elizabeth, a day hasn’t gone by that I don’t think of you. The day you left me and transitioned from this earth was the worst day in my life, but you raised me to be strong and independent. I live to make you proud of me. I miss you so much and can’t wait until the day we are reunited. Please take care of Janice, Sharon, Nicky, and Mom.
PERSONAL REFLECTION
As I sit in my office daily to catch my breath from personal responsibilities and commitments, I often glance through the window to gaze at the skyline of a hustling and bustling metropolitan city. I realize how blessed and how favored I have been in this life. Every day, I see mothers struggling to raise their children, trying to make ends meet, to put food on the table, and to provide a roof over their children’s heads. As if that is not enough, I see mothers trying to provide decent clothing for their children to wear and trying to raise their children to have respect, manners, and strong moral values. Being a single mother and raising a son in today’s society is not an easy task. I see the daily struggles, and I hear the daily tears.
As I reflect on my own lean years—when I sometimes had to go without, or play sports in sneakers with holes on the bottoms, or buy sneakers with four stripes and cut off one stripe with a razor blade to make it look like I had new Adidas on, being on the brink of homelessness, standing on the corner carrying two trash bags in my hands (the sum of all of my possessions)—I realize that it has not always been easy. As I travel across this nation, from city to city, I hear the same cry from single mothers raising sons. However, through my difficult and lean years, the one constant was my mother. Without fail, she was always there. Since it takes a village, I must give credit to her support system. She had the support of her sisters and her mother, the greatest grandmother in the world. But unfortunately, some of our villages are broken, and some single mothers have limited family support. As much as the courts try to enforce it, child support simply is not always enough. Child support does not provide for a child’s basic necessities. It helps, but when you add the cost of travel,
