Words from the Author
When you hear the term single mother,
what is the first thing that comes to mind? Is it poverty, welfare, struggle, or simply taboo? There are many negative stereotypes regarding the single mother. Single motherhood affects women of all races and backgrounds, regardless of their circumstances—whether those women are divorced, widowed, never been married, or was single by choice. Being a single mother is an epidemic that grows every second of the day. The following are some alarming statistics regarding single motherhood.
According to the US Census Bureau in November 2009:
* There are approximately 13.7 million single parents in the United States, and those parents are responsible for raising 21.8 million children (approximately 26 percent of children under the age of twenty-one in the US today).
* Approximately 84 percent of custodial parents are mothers; and 16 percent of custodial parents are fathers.
* Of the mothers who are custodial parents, 45 percent are currently divorced or separated, 34.2 percent have never been married, 19 percent are married (in most cases, these numbers represent women who have remarried), and 1.7 percent were widowed.
It is obvious how a child is created, and most importantly, it is a mother—who gives that child life, regardless of the consequences. A number of women did not realize that they were going to be a single mother (including myself) until they received their pregnancy results. When that happens, you realize that you are no longer able to think of only about you
in all aspects of your life.
Single motherhood may very well be hard at times, but the crucial part about it is this, and please read carefully: The decisions you make each and every day of your life (and in your child's or children's lives) will make being a single mother a more fulfilling role.
This book focuses on ways to improve single motherhood. There are so many stereotypical and negative views out there on the nature of single motherhood, and I strongly believe it is best to maneuver away
