Introduction
Many parents feel confident in their abilities while their children are young, just to wonder how they missed it all when their children reach adolescence.
And who are these strangers who live in the body of their teenagers and what did they do with the offspring that we know?
Parenting is no longer the same as before. Fewer families include a parent who stays at home. Economically, most families need both parents to be employed.
More and more women are single parents, and also men are not left out. The children, who are now adolescents, were in a daycare center or were looked after by people other than their parents.
They don't see you as the arbiter of their lives or the holder of all the keys because you are gone.
Television and computers have also made information readily available to children - information that was only available to adults a few years ago.
The way we have protected children in the past from overwhelming documents such as sexual images, disasters and images of war-torn bodies was to make it unavailable, but It's almost impossible. The children are traumatized by the news.
They are also under immense pressure to engage in activities and interests for which their peers and the media tell them they are ready.
Advertising, relaxed standards in TV programs and movies, and the availability of adult content make our children (and indeed many parents) believe that ten-year-old should worry about deodorant and engage sexually.
When parents are asked, they often want to reduce their child's unacceptable behavior. The old parenting styles that many of us grew up with were based on behavioral control.
They worked quite well at the time because the children were more dependent on their parents.
Nowadays, the same methods often lead to extremely unsuccessful results as they trigger dramatic reactions in children, which is often the opposite of what we hoped for.
When parents now use dominant tones, establish the law, and are unaware of their child's perspective, while expecting immediate and undisputed obedience, adolescents often respond with assault or rejection in terms that we never would have dared to use.
We cannot focus only on ending behaviors or on our own well-being. There is nothing stupid and helpless than feeling when
