Lila's got a plan...
Lila Teafeather, age nine, is helping her Grandmum when she discovers a picture in the upstairs closet. Grandmum tells her about the tea parties she used to host with her friends. Struck by inspiration, Lila decides to throw a tea party like the ones her Grandmum used to, but she needs help. Baking catastrophes, new friends, and some tricky recipes leads Lila to wonder if she'll be able to restore the spark in her Grandmum's eye. Can she bring back the tea parties of old? Or will they stay a distant memory?

The old wooden door to Grandmum’s closet creaked open when Lila Teafeather, age 9, twisted the handle. Nine was an odd and magical age for little witches like Lila. The peacock standing next to her could attest to that.

It’s dark in there. I don’t think we should go inside.

We have to. Grandmum asked us to get the broom for Mira and she keeps her house broom in here.

Why? It looks so creepy and did I mention, dark?

Lila tried not to roll her eyes as she flipped the switch just inside the door.

    Better?

I suppose. Grab the broom and let’s go. You know how I feel about small spaces.

Lila did roll her eyes this time. Oscar, the peacock, was Lila’s familiar. They had a troubled meeting about a year and a half before, but now they were as thick as thieves. That tends to happen when you can talk in each others’ heads.

Lila stepped into the small closet. It smelled of old wood and spiders, a smell that she had come to associate with old untouched things. Her Grandmum must not use the house broom very often. That made sense though. Until recently, Grandmum could have just cleaned up any mess with a whistled tune, but now her magic and her memory were failing.

Lila started spending her afternoons at Grandmum’s house to take care of the things she needed and to make sure she ate dinner. Lila’s mom and dad helped look after Grandmum when they could, but they worked late into the evening most days. So, Lila persuaded Mira, Lila’s 12-year-old cousin, to babysit Lila at Grandmum’s house, leaving Lila free to help Grandmum with stuff around the place.

Lila found the old broom in the back corner of the closet stuffed behind some winter jackets and a pile of small cardboard boxes. Lila tried to move the broom around them and she thought she had done it too, until she heard a THUMP! And the box on the top of the pile fell over scattering pictures everywhere.

Well done Lila, now there’s more mess to clean
