About this ebook
Lila Teafeather is turning ten...
Ten is a big birthday for the little witches and wizards of Butterpond, Connecticut, not that you have to tell Lila that. She's a nervous wreck. She's about to find out if she is a Natural Baking Witch, a hope she's carried with her since she was little. But when her friends start having random outbursts because of something they ate, Lila starts to think that maybe she isn't a baking witch after all. But if she isn't, what is she?

H appy Birthday to you! Happy Birthday to you! Happy Birthday dear Lila! Happy Birthday to you!
Lila Teafeather’s parents sang as she walked down the stairs. She rubbed her eyes and gave her parents a smile.
Again, this year? I thought we agreed just to celebrate my actual birthday.
Lila sighed, gazing at the pile of her favorite donuts stacked on the plate her mom was holding. They looked delicious and smelled even better. Lila’s belly grumbled.
Yes, well, this is your most important birthday… at least for a couple more years, so we’re celebrating all week. Next year we can be regular old parents that only celebrate the day of your birth.
Lila’s mom said, pushing the plate towards Lila.
Alright, twist my arm...,
She took the plate of donuts from her mom and went to the table. Her parents followed her and they took their seats in front of empty plates
And since it is such an important birthday and we are very proud of you, we have some special surprises for you this year,
Lila’s mom said.
Lila’s dad winked at her. Yeah, I can't wait to see your face on Wednesday!
Lila laughed taking a bite of her donut, it was crumbly, buttery, chocolatey, and sweet. All the things that a donut should be. The scent of chocolate, the taste of it, wrapped Lila in a warm blankety haze.
Can I have some? Oscar, asked. He bumped into Lila’s elbow as she was taking another bite, jarring the donut to the side and hitting her cheek.
Oscar, Lila’s familiar, was a peacock and very fond of all things baked or chocolate. His favorite treat was brownies made by Grandmum, Lila’s great grandmother. They were the best.
I don’t know, have you tidied your room like I asked? That place was a mess yesterday and you know I’m going to need my desk to do homework this afternoon. Lila responded in her head.
Oscar and Lila could talk telepathically. It was something familiars could do with their witch or wizard. Familiars didn’t have a whole lot of use when you were in elementary school like Lila, but she had been assured by her cousin Mira, that once they got to Middle School, Oscar would be training as much as Lila was so they could tackle harder spells.
I have cleaned all of my things, yes. Oscar told her, a little huffily.
Lila nodded. Oscar bent over Lila’s plate and stole a donut running away laughing.
OSCAR! That room better be clean when I get home! Or I’m getting brownies from Grandmum and I won’t share with you. Lila hollered in her head.
Oscar stopped cold in the doorway heading to the stairs. You wouldn’t.
Don’t test me. Lila said, smiling smugly. His beak opened halfway, threatening to drop the donut on the floor, in shock. Then, Oscar closed his mouth, keeping the donut firmly in his beak and continued upstairs to his room.
I’ll have it done by the time you get home. He said glumly. Lila laughed.
Lila’s parents were having their own conversation, used to Oscar’s antics. Once Oscar was gone, they turned the conversation back to Lila, sure they would have her full attention now Oscar was gone.
So, today’s surprise is a new dress. It’s waiting for you on the chair in your room. I thought you might like to wear it to school. It matches the colors of the season, plus it’s in that rich orange color you’ve been favoring.
Lila’s mom said as Lila finished her third donut. Lila’s mom looked down at her watch. "Oh, look at the time. We’re running a little behind schedule today. You need to get ready for school. I don’t
