Adolescence should be a high note for Iris but somehow it just sounds flat. Where’s the fun, the excitement, the adventure of finally growing up? She thinks she might be the problem but nothing that a new year new me party can’t fix. Hopefully.

To all the Irises looking for a friend in the mirror

    Chapter 1

I have nothing to wear! Iris said to her room with satisfaction, she was a girl after all. Many had expressed their doubts: her mother commenting on her still flat chest, her father commenting on her only hobby which was sleeping, her brothers commenting on her incredible footwork after she beat them at football. Iris couldn’t do a thing about her chest; missing toilet paper wouldn’t go unnoticed in a frugal family of five. Sleeping was free and she was eight years older than the twins, of course she had better motor coordination. All simply explained and yet there had been doubts even in Iris mind that she wasn’t a "normal’’ girl. She didn’t look or feel the way she had expected at nearly sixteen. Nonetheless she felt vindicated looking at half of her wardrobe thrown randomly on her bed. Then the despair was back, she had nothing to wear to the first party she was invited to as an independent member of society. This wasn’t a family backyard party or a school gathering; this was the neighborhood New Year party for teens! Adults would host and supervise but they were kind of irrelevant since they stayed inside doing adult things and the teens could enjoy themselves outside. This year Mrs. Briana was hosting, her backyard was more like a small park and there was a pool! Iris still couldn’t believe she had been invited by the hostess herself. It came out of the blue: Iris was coming home from school one Wednesday afternoon and doing a bit of window shopping when she noticed a lady struggling to open the door of a store while also holding a stroller. She had offered to help and when the lady was in the middle of saying thanks she recognized her:

Aren’t you Iris, the daughter of Lydia and Matthew? You are quite grown up, what a beautiful young lady you have become, well-mannered too. I trust your parents and your brothers are doing much better. We’ll see more of them around then. I’ll see you at the New Year party, won’t I? It’s the twenty ninth of December. Of course you’re invited, I’m hosting this year. Extend the invitations to your parents too. Have a good evening, bye!

Iris had barely put two words in the conversation but there it was, she was invited. Her parents weren’t exactly
