Chapter 1
Rebecca stepped onto the porch outside the classroom and raised her face to the late afternoon sun peaking over the treetops. Behind closed eyelids she could see the hues of red and orange but the cooler air was in complete contrast to the warm colours she could define behind closed eyes. Fall was coming to an end all right, and in a few weeks, the entire landscape would be covered in a blanket of white snow, her favourite season of the year. She inhaled deeply, held her breath and marvelled at Gott’s creation then said a silent prayer of thanks for the beautiful day.
As a teacher she was fortunate enough to be one of the few women allowed to spend time behind books instead of in a kitchen, but also only to a point. She had a curriculum to stick to, and she only needed to know what the kinner needed to learn. Strict rules had to be followed. It was all about the ABC’s and one, two three’s, writing, reading, arithmetic and Amish history, that was it. Anything outside of this framework was verboten. The kinner had no business in learning about economy, or biology and science or anything related to the Englisch world for that matter. Computers, cellular phones and electronics were doorways for the devil to defile the innocence of the kinner and having such modern technology was strictly prohibited. They were separated from the modern world with all its wickedness and subjected to the authority of the church and Gott. But even with this reality being all she ever knew and lived for, she had a thirst for knowledge. Her Mudder used always says she had an enquiring mind. While most girls tended to house work, she questioned the simplicity of it all and thought up ways to make all these daily chores go faster. But sooner than later she had to conform to what was expected and just exist like everyone else. It was only when she was old enough to apply for the teaching job at the local Amish school that she finally had the opportunity to expand her horizons. While she taught at the school, she would gain more knowledge, read more books and learn more about the world and people in general. Her keen interest in human behaviour and why some people were so dramatically different to others intrigued her and she invested all her extra time in studying psychology. This was all thanks to her younger bruder Johnny, who since a very young age was different to all the other kinner.
In the distance she saw the familiar rooftop of the black buggy trailing behind it a cloud of dust. Johnny, and her mother was on their way to fetch her and a slight glimmer of excitement swirled around inside her. She always looked forward to going home after a week of teaching and studying. At first her mudder had insisted that they would take her to school every day, but the trip from the farm was almost a full hour and with her bruder’s erratic behaviour and unexpected mood swings she wouldn’t chance it. Thankfully the Bishop had suggested she stay in the small room above the schoolhouse during the week to save herself the trip which worked out perfectly. At least this way she could spend her quiet time doing what she loved most, study.
As they drew near, she quickly ran up the stairs to her room to grab her bags and make sure she had put away all her own books. Her mudder never really bothered coming upstairs to her room, but she would rather not take the chance. If anyone found out about her long distance learning, she would surely be shunned. A sliver of guilt sliced through her, knowing all too well she’s breaking the Ordnung by furthering her education, but she quickly suppressed the
