Chapter 1
Once upon a time there was a little girl named Lilly. Lilly lived with her parents at the center of the world in the attic of a house that her parents built. There was a lovely tree out back, one perfect for climbing, and sometimes Lilly’s parents gave her cuddly warm rabbits or floppy purring kittens to care for and play with. Her mother sang songs to Lilly and read to her all day long. Her father told Lilly a lovely story every night before bed.
Her mother’s hair, like her father’s, was white like bone bleached by the sun and her skin was as delicate as the finest tracing paper. They both seemed very old and very tired, but they appeared thrilled with the fact that they had a daughter and doted on her day and night.
Above all else, the mother and the father wished to keep their child alive, but humans were such fragile, short lived creatures.
Their house stood proudly at the edge of an ancient forest that stretched out as far as the eye could see. In their soft raspy voices, her parents told Lilly that people could wander through the forest for weeks, even years, before finding their way out. And, apparently, a few people
