1
Nine-year old Lila Teafeather fidgeted at her new, third grade desk at Butterpond Elementary. Her purple hair was pulled into its usual bun and her leg swung in time to the beat of Ms. Kettle’s speech.
Ms. Kettle was finishing her welcome back speech on orientation night, but Lila wanted it to be over already. She couldn’t care less about how to line up to leave. She wanted to go play in the last rays of summer before she returned to learn more magic, more history, and her least favorite, more math.

Ms Kettle nodded, smiling. "One morning this week you will wake up and see a colored line, like a rope. Only you will be able to see it. This is your guide to your familiar. You will follow it and find your familiar on the other end. Ms. Rogers told me that you’ve been trained in the lasso spell. I want you to continue practicing that spell because that is how you’re going to catch your familiar. You’ll have until the end of this
