    Nine-year old Lila Teafeather fidgeted at her new, third grade desk at Butterpond Elementary. Her purple hair was pulled into its usual bun and her leg swung in time to the beat of Ms. Kettle’s speech.

    Ms. Kettle was finishing her welcome back speech on orientation night, but Lila wanted it to be over already. She couldn’t care less about how to line up to leave. She wanted to go play in the last rays of summer before she returned to learn more magic, more history, and her least favorite, more math.

    Lila’s new teacher, Ms. Kettle seemed nice. She smiled often and answered questions with grace. Her long brown hair was pulled in a ballerina bun, just like Lila’s. She wore a long black skirt and a twinkling sweater made of stars. Lila liked Ms. Kettle, but man could she talk.

    Lila’s mom put a hand on her swinging knee, pulling Lila from her thoughts.

    Hold still, sweety. This is important. Her mom whispered, not taking her eyes from the still talking Ms. Kettle.

    Lila stopped swinging her leg, and instead began silently thrumming her fingers on the other knee, the one her mom couldn’t see.

    Now, where are the little witches and wizards in the room? Ms. Kettle asked.

    Lila perked up and raised her hand, as did about ten other boys and girls.

    Ms Kettle nodded, smiling. "One morning this week you will wake up and see a colored line, like a rope. Only you will be able to see it. This is your guide to your familiar. You will follow it and find your familiar on the other end. Ms. Rogers told me that you’ve been trained in the lasso spell. I want you to continue practicing that spell because that is how you’re going to catch your familiar. You’ll have until the end of this
