A Spell of the Heart - Emmie B.

Lila Teafeather stood on a two-step step-stool looking down at the light pink liquid swirling in her large copper cauldron. She looked up at her Grandmum.

Is is it working? She asked.

Yes, my dear. Look at Oscar, he's glowing.

Lila turned to see that her peacock familiar was indeed glowing a light blue color. Lila could feel her magic pulsing in time with Oscar's glowing feathers.

How much longer are we going to do this? I'm hungry... and tired. Oscar said, We've been doing this for weeks.

Pish posh, Grandmum said, You better stop your complaining. You know that Lila needs you. Besides, if you keep complaining I won't let you have any of those brownies I made this morning.

Oscar looked appalled but shut his beak. He wasn't going to risk losing out on Grandmum's brownies, that was for sure.

Lila laughed. Thank you for doing this for me again, Oscar. I know you've been doing it more often, it's just that my magic is stronger than we expected. Lila said, patting his back, then moving to stroke his neck feathers. He leaned into the scratch, though still trying to look like he wasn't enjoying himself.

Grandmum smiled. Yes, you’ve got more power in you than either me or Ms. Kettle expected. It’s almost more than Oscar can handle.

At this Lila stared at Grandmum, her eyes wide. What does that mean? What are we going to do if my magic is too strong for him? What will happen to Oscar if I give him too much magic?

Grandmum squeezed Lila's shoulder. Its okay Little Star, we’ll take care of it.

Lila nodded but her tummy was whirling and suddenly sparks flew from her fingers and landed in the potion, releasing a deep red smoke. Grandmum expected a reaction like this, and put out the flames, but not before Oscar inhaled too deeply in surprise. He began coughing quite profusely. Lila patted his back.

    Are you alright?

I'll be fine, I suppose. Though if I die a horrible death, then you know why. Oscar said dramatically, still coughing. Then after a moment, he added, Do I get a brownie now?

    Grandmum and Lila laughed.

Oh, he's fine, Lila said, shaking her head and retrieving a brownie for her chocolate obsessed familiar.

I regret that Bartholomew taught you to talk with Lila’s extra magic. Grandmum said, passing the brownie to Oscar. Now, eat your brownie . We need to get back to this spell. Lila can’t go back to school tomorrow without this managed.

Oscar shoved the whole piece of brownie in his mouth, chewed three times and swallowed. Lila stared at him, slack-jawed. Grandmum chuckled.

I didn’t mean to eat that fast, you silly bird. She told him.

Oscar shrugged and got back on his stool. Lila went back to her spot and they finished the draining spell.

The magic buzzed in Lila’s ears and she moved from foot to foot impatient for the spell to lock.

    She knew when it did.

    The extra energy her
