About this ebook
The Fifth Grade Test has arrived...
Lila Teafeather, age 10, has been waiting to learn 'bigger magic' ever since her cousin Mira started middle school. Sixth grade starts that journey, assuming she can pass the Fifth Grade Test, that is. Lila and her friends intend to spend their week-long Spring Break practicing their magic skills, but when their familiars begin acting strangely, and their teacher sends riddles through their spellgendas, it's up to her and her friends to figure out what is going on. Will they be able to solve this puzzle before their big test? Will they be stuck in fifth grade for another year?

A Test of Knowledge - Emmie B.
1
Ms. Kettle’s fifth grade classroom hummed with chatter as the students worked on upcoming and late assignments. Lila Teafeather, a ten-year-old purple-haired witch, sat quietly in the second row from the front, writing a story for her creative writing assignment.
Alright class, pencils down please, and eyes on me.
Ms. Kettle announced from the front of the classroom.
Lila hurriedly finished the sentence she was working on and then placed her pen on the desk, locking eyes on her teacher. Within seconds the classroom was quiet and alert, waiting for Ms. Kettle to make her announcement.
The air in the room sang with their anticipation. The students knew what Ms. Kettle was going to announce, at least they thought they knew what she was going to announce. It was that time of year.
Ms. Kettle, tall, dark-haired and kind, smiled at them all. It is getting very close to the end of the school year, very close to the end of your fifth grade year and you know what that means, don’t you?
She asked looking at each and every face in the classroom. All the heads in the room nodded, including Lila, though her stomach did a loop de loop. Who can tell me what I am referring to?
Lila’s friend Ruby, and a couple of other students raised their hands. Ms. Kettle called on Ruby to answer.
We have the Fifth Grade Tests.
Ruby said, her voice a little higher pitched than normal. Lila knew it was because Ruby was trying to restrain herself from having one of her excited/nervous outbursts.
Ms. Kettle nodded, pleased. Exactly! Now, who can tell me why the Fifth Grade Test is so important?
Ruby again raised her hand, but this time Ms. Kettle called on Daphne.
Daphne swallowed before answering. The Fifth Grade Test is important because it decides whether we are able to move onto advanced training and the next grade.
Her voice cracked towards the end of the sentence and Lila’s stomach flip-flopped again.
Ms. Kettle nodded, Correct! I am so proud of how much you guys are learning! It’s very encouraging.
She moved to the whiteboard, continuing to speak while a marker began writing on the board by itself. I wanted to take some time to prepare your minds and explain what you can do to get ready for the test.
She said, beginning to pace in front of the white board. As Daphne mentioned, this test will determine if you are ready to dive into the more complicated magic associated with your talent. There will be four tests. One will be a healing spell, the second will be a specialty spell, and the third will be a companion spell done with your familiar. Also, I advise you to keep your spell-gendas near you, because I will be sending out some tips throughout the week for your studying.
Ms. Kettle told the class.
As she finished speaking the eraser on her desk jumped up and began ringing. The eraser marked the end of school, sort of like bells in the outside world. No one moved.
Every student was waiting, making sure they heard every instruction from Ms. Kettle. This was their most important test to date. Not passing would mean being stuck
