Chapter 1 – Phantom Limbs

It took a long while for Jenny to wake up from after the heavy anesthesia she had to receive for the multiple surgeries that she had to undergo. She was groggy and confused. Jenny raised her one remaining hand to her face to brush away some hair but realized her hand didn’t connect with her face. She tried again with the same result and instead settled into blinking her tired eyes so she could see.

There was nothing to see straight ahead, only a white and illuminated ceiling with lines running across it. Right, the hospital. She had received the news that her legs and left arm had to be amputated after an accident, and she had been rushed to surgery. Jenny had been unable to take care of herself with only one functioning limb and was unsure how her life would turn out with all but her right arm removed. But, she had really not had any choice—it was either amputation or death—and Tom had assured her that everything would be fine.

Her throat was dry, but she still tried to speak. Tom? What’s going on?

It only took a few seconds for her lover to appear by her side. He was pale and looked incredibly tired. Hey, welcome back. The surgeries went well, but there was some complications. Try to stay calm.

Jenny still felt dizzy and completely exhausted. Complications? You’re scaring me now—what’s happened?

Tom said nothing. Instead, he pulled on the white quilt covering her body, which made it slide down, revealing what had gone wrong.

Jenny’s heart suddenly started pounding in her chest. It felt like air was being pulled out of her lungs and as if she was caught in a nightmare. Where is my arm?! What the fuck is this?!

When her body had been revealed, Jenny could see that not only were her legs and left arm gone—so was her right. She had no extremities at all, and only her torso remained. What was left of her naked body lay exposed in a hospital room.

She tossed and turned out of sheer panic but could barely move an inch. Tom easily restrained her and did his best to talk her down by speaking calmly. The infection had spread. You were about to die in the operating room, but the surgeon managed to save your life—but he couldn’t save your arm.

A young man rushed into the room, apparently alarmed by the sounds Jenny was making. Is everything alright in here?
