Procrastination Hacks - Patrick Magana
Introduction
Have you ever procrastinated? Silly question, I know. All of us have procrastinated at some point in our lives. In one survey, 95% [22] of the respondents admitted to procrastinating. In fact, procrastinating may be a phenomenon that is as old as humankind. An Egyptologist from the University of Toronto was translating hieroglyphs that dated back to 1400 B.C. In one section of writings, he found the following statement: Friends, stop putting off work, and allow us to go home in good time.
[²²]
The question that I really want you to ask yourself is, how has procrastination impacted your life? Has procrastination led to major consequences for you in your relationships, in your health, financially, or in your career? Unless you are that rare individual, the answer is yes!
I remember many years ago how I was in a relationship with a woman that I loved deeply. Unfortunately, I had a demanding work schedule, which greatly limited the amount of time that we had to spend time with each other. I knew that I should schedule time off from work. I had known this for over three years, but I never did it.
I continually found reasons why I needed to postpone taking time off. That is how procrastination works. You know that there is something that you need to do, but you keep finding reasons for not doing it. Because I failed to make a committed decision, I lost that relationship. There was only one person who was responsible for my relationship ending; that person was me. It is for this reason that I decided to write this book.
Shortly after losing my relationship, I lost my job. When I was not job hunting, I devoted all my free time researching procrastination and how to overcome it. This book is the culmination of over three years of studying the literature, applying what I learned to my life, and making modifications as needed. Today, I can honestly say that the amount of time that I spend procrastinating is minimal. When I do, it involves things that do not impact the quality of my life.
I wrote this book to be a guide to overcoming procrastination. It does not matter where you are in life. Whether you are 60-years-old and have procrastinated all your life, or if you repeatedly tried to quit procrastinating but failed, I want you to consider this book as the beginning of a fresh start.
You will learn a wide range of strategies, many of which are relatively unknown, that can make a powerful change in your life. Having said this, I ask you again to reflect on your past. What are the consequences that you experienced due to your procrastination? As you relive these experiences, commit now! Make a commitment to yourself that you will not go through anything like that in the future. Take action now!
Note To The Reader
Ultimately, the secret behind any effective strategy for overcoming procrastination is taking consistent and meaningful action. To be consistent, you need to take action daily. To be meaningful, you need to take action that leads to your desired outcome.
Besides explaining what causes procrastination, this book offers numerous exercises. These exercises provide the opportunity for taking what you have learned and putting it into practice. For this book to be effective, it is critical that you do not just read it but that you do the exercises as instructed.
Understanding that many of us have hectic schedules, I ask that you devote a minimum of five minutes a day to this book. Read for five minutes and then skip to end of the chapter and do the exercise today. If you have done the exercise already, do it again! If a chapter or exercise seems overwhelming, break it up in parts. If it takes one week to read one chapter or to do one exercise, that is okay!
However, you approach this book, take some form of action each day! Do not skip a day! Success is created through small successive victories over a period of time. It is through the taking of small daily steps that our dreams are ultimately realized.
Chapter 1: How You Came To Be A Procrastinator
I got Zeus, my Yorkshire terrier, as a pup. When he was old enough, we would let him have the run of the house, except at nighttime. Before retiring to bed, I would put Zeus in his crate. Getting Zeus into his crate was a non-issue; he willingly got in. With time, his cooperative behavior began a steady decline. It came to a point when Zeus would demonstrate resistance when it was crate time. Sometimes it took repeated coaxing and gentle nudging (I do not believe in forcing my dog to do anything that he does not want to do) before he would give in.
Though it may not seem obvious from my depiction of Zeus, he was showing all the dynamics of a procrastinator. Though I am not a mind reader, I feel fairly confident that I know what was going on in Zeus’s mind. Besides having a strong background in human psychology and animal behavior, I have also worked with exotic animals professionally for a number of years. When Zeus was a pup, having the freedom to roam around the house was a positive experience for him. While spending time in his crate was not as enjoyable, it was not experienced in a negative way.
With time, the feelings that Zeus associated with these experiences began to take a shift. His experience of roaming around the house became even more positive than when he was a pup. Zeus's relationship with us deepened, and he could explore more of the house due to his greater size and strength. Conversely, he started to associate going into his crate as being increasingly negative. Where the contrast between roaming free and going into his crate was once insignificant, he now viewed the differences between these two experiences as polar opposites. Zeus's resistance to going into his crate was a form of procrastination.
The Dynamics Of Procrastination
Whenever we procrastinate, we are operating under the same dynamics that I described in Zeus. In fact, these dynamics play out in the lives of all living things. An earthworm will avoid bright light and seek sanctuary underneath the ground. A gazelle
