    When life gets tough, it’s hard to know what steps you can take to improve your mental health and well-being. So often, common advice is invalidating and less-than-helpful; Just smile and things will feel better. You sound ungrateful, be grateful for what you have. Stop thinking about the bad things, be positive! These platitudes, at best, cause a feeling of annoyance, and at worst, feelings of shame and alienation.

    Unfortunately, a lot of the advice that people give and receive regarding mental health struggles are these kinds of dismissive hand-waves. While well-meaning, they offer little practical use and can often lead to further frustration or isolation, as they treat very real problems as inconveniences to be ignored or disregarded rather than what they are: obstacles to be overcome.
