Rehab for Raised Spirits - Tricia-Nicole Lefevers
Step One:
Admit you Have a Problem
Cleaning Day
I’ve hoarded my pain as
Old issues stacked against my ribs
Sensibility buried beneath bottles stuffed with IOUs
And boxes of better-left unsaid
But my gloves are on
And this gutter full of grudges will be the first to go
Bramblewood Heart
In the quiet of the long winter mornings
My knuckles ache, cold as I set to the macabre task of
Removing the pieces of myself that have died
Some I shave to stubborn roots
Knowing with time and effort
They, too, will be ready for culling
Others are heavy in my hands
I yearn to keep their comfortable, familiar rings
Just for one more cycle
But that is not growth, and I am eager to bloom
In the loam of my heart there are thorns
Defensive things, created from the wetness of weeping
Forgive-me-nots that cry danger, a constant high alarm
They dig into my skin, scraping as I pull them out
Thanking them one by one, I lay each to rest
When the work is done, I stand and smile
I am a garden of possibility
Fresh soil and new seeds
The dawn arrives and I stretch myself towards the sun
A new day has come
A new day has come
