    WHO IS IN YOUR BOAT?

    The people in your life may engender calamity or calmness.

    Jonah in the boat

    A GROUP of mariners were preparing to embark on a journey. A man named Jonah approached them and said he wanted to join them. These mariners were gracious enough to allow him get on board.

    In the course of their journey, a mighty tempest arose which brought about apparent threat to life. After consultations with their gods and among themselves, these men came to the conclusion that the storm was as a result of the man they had on board; he was being pursued by God for disobedience.

    Then they asked him, What is your occupation? And where do you come from? What is your country? And of what people are you? Eventually, they threw him overboard and then onwards the sea raged no more. [This is from the story of Jewish Prophet Jonah as narrated in the Old Testament of the Bible. You may read the full account of this part of his story in Jonah 1:1-16].

    Perhaps if those questions which were asked of this stranger in the midst of the storm had been asked before admitting him into the boat, they wouldn’t have taken him on board and the stormy situations could
