HIDDEN TRUTH – plain but profound

Money often costs too much. - Ralph Waldo Emerson

GROWING up as a child in Ghana I often heard adults retort, Do you think money grows on trees? That line was and still is hurled at children who incessantly make financial demands on parents and guardians, as if disposable incomes are infinite. In the corporate world, I have heard managers rehearse the same statement to their subordinates.

Now let me ask you, does money grow on trees? Wouldn’t it be terrific to have a space at your backyard where you cultivate a money garden? This garden will be full of trees whose fruits are dollar bills. You may even opt for a mixed-crop garden where you will have various trees for different currencies – Euro, British pound, Chinese yuan, Ghanaian cedi or the Nigerian naira.

This will be so fascinating; that whenever you need a cash boost, you make a quick trip to your backyard and with the aid of your sickle, machete, or by stretching your hand, you pluck some money and voila.

Of course, that will be the situation in a dream world. Let’s get back to the real world. In the real world, money is not something you harvest from a tree at your backyard. The proponents of money doesn’t grow on trees know this very well and always seek to draw the attention of their naïve dependants and subordinates to it.

Nonetheless, as a student of Literature and life, I have learnt to look at the expression, Money grows on trees through metaphorical lenses. Through those lenses, we draw some parallels that affirm some truths about personal financial management.

Just as we need trees to keep our environment sane, so do we need money to experience fulfillment in life.

Wealth is not built easily, so are trees not cultivated with a quick fix gesture.

Just as a tree is produced from seeds sown, so is money (or personal net worth) a product of deliberate small actions.

Inasmuch as a little seed can produce a big tree, so can a little investment produce great wealth.

Just as a seed that is planted will not mature into a fruit-bearing tree if not nurtured well, so will positive actions, if not consistently reinforced, not yield desirable outcomes.

Anytime you lose a tree, you miss all the fruits that could have been produced by that tree. Again, anytime you compromise in any value-adding aspect of your life, you risk all potential financial returns that may inure to your benefit.

Just as it takes deliberate action, diligence and patience to transform a seed into a fruit-bearing tree, so is the journey from poverty to prosperity.

True, you may not cultivate a money farm to enhance your fortunes. But you certainly would have to apply the principles to enhance your financial prospects. So, although money does not grow on trees presents a literal truth, it also has wrapped up in it an antithetical truth that money grows on trees.

In this book, I have put together ethical and pragmatic rungs that will be of strategic benefit, if you desire to climb the ladder of prosperity.

I devote the pages in chapters 2, 3, 4 and 5 to discuss and advocate a view of money that is wholesome and holistic. In chapters 6 and 7, I pay attention to specific adjustments we need to make in our lifestyle to help us avoid indebtedness. I move on to dedicate the next six chapters to expound concepts and strategies that can help people to grow their wealth.

The last chapter is a case study of how a person’s life can be transformed by applying the principles that I advocate in this book. I will tell you about a serial Ghanaian entrepreneur who completely turned his life around using many of the ideas that are in this book.

Although the language is plain, the ideas are profound. Profound helps to preserve and present truth in an unadulterated manner, while plain ensures that intellectual ideas do not confound anybody. This is the philosophy that informs my
