    Sam’s alarm came all too soon. His entire body groaned as he reached out blindly, silencing his phone. He hadn’t slept much the night before. Not that he was complaining though. Jessica Wilker, a twenty-five-year-old sandy-blond woman from work had met up with him for drinks and it had ended well. Very well. So well that she had spent the night. Sam hoped the alarm hadn’t woken her up. He rolled over in bed to apologize if it had or cuddle up as the big spoon if it hadn’t, but she wasn’t there. He sat up, grogginess weighing his head down. Rubbing his eyes awake, he looked around the room. Her clothes were gone and he didn’t hear the shower. She must have left already.

    Of course she left already, he thought to himself. She has to be there early. You’re just security. She actually does real work in the office.

    Not that he didn’t do real work at Amblin & Lester. As the largest military contractor in the Southeast, the company worked with some pretty heavy hitters, not just in the United States but around the world. While Sam worked at the main office building and not one of the manufacturing facilities (which were mostly scattered along the coast and in Arizona), the head of security at the main office still heaped a ton of responsibility onto his shoulders. Yet something Jessica had said, in her sleep no less, made him pause. He typically didn’t sleep soundly at night. From the caffeine he drank to stay alert at work to the caffeinated pre-workout supplements he took prior to hitting the gym, Sam typically had enough caffeine coursing through his body at any given moment to kill a lesser person.
