    Jessica Wilker closed her eyes and breathed slowly, trying to steady her pounding heart. She swallowed hard, a dry, forced swallow. She could feel every muscle in her throat tighten under the effort. Jessica wanted to call it off. To go back home and slink into a hot bubble bath, wineglass in hand (with the bottle not far beyond) and forget about everything. But she couldn’t. It was now or never.

    The patter of rain on the roof of her car brought her back. She opened her eyes and looked through the windshield at the office building of Amblin & Lester, the largest military contractor in the entire Southeast. They didn’t handle any of the construction at the office building; it was just where all the contracts were signed and discussed –– where all the dirty work went down. As a bright-eyed college graduate of the University of Michigan’s engineering program, Jessica had been ecstatic to get such a prestigious job right out of school. It meant warmer weather in sunny Georgia. It meant excellent pay. It meant happiness.

    At least that was what she’d thought three years ago. Now the howl of wind twisting around her car mocked her.

    Heavy storm clouds swallowed whatever sun would have remained that close to evening, yet despite the darkness, Jessica could still see one office light burning bright on the top floor thirty-seven stories up: the CEO’s office. William Lester had always come across as a strict but capable boss, intelligent with an eye for the future. He was the kind of guy few crossed and kept their job, but he also rewarded hard work.
