Bared to Him 4: An Adult Romance

Looking over the hunched shoulders of her boss, Lillian could see the smooth waters of the harbor rippling. They may look calm on the surface but it was the current underneath the water that held the young writer’s attention. Swirling, surging underneath that smooth exterior were patterns and pathways that could drag you out to sea and drown you before you had time to call for help. She knew that feeling all too well. Not the drowning; the surging deadly energy invisible to the naked eye ready to strike at any moment.

Your work has been getting better, Miss Sauers. Sandra sighed, not looking up to make eye contact with her protégé. Lillian had no idea Sandra kept pushing her because she believed Lillian had everything she needed to be a feature writer someday. She just thought the older woman hated her with the stale resentment usually reserved for young writers. This didn’t have the usual energy we expect from summer storylines, but it was more subtle and mature.

Thank you, Mrs. Collins. I’d like to do some investigation and pieces with more depth for the fall, Lillian ventured. She’d been waiting for the right time to pitch her idea and this seemed like the best. You know that submarine in the harbor? I want to track down some of the troops who actually served on it and profile their stories. That way, it can make the exhibit come alive.

Sandra paused for a moment, frowning. The young writer could never tell if that meant something good or bad because she’d seen that scowl prior to receiving answers in both directions. Fortunately, the downturned mouth faded and a head nod followed.

That is a brilliant idea. It would draw a lot of attention from the locals now that the tourists are leaving, and up the quality of our paper. You can start working on that right after you cover the opening.

Opening? I don’t have an opening on my schedule until the new aquarium exhibit opens in November. Lillian pulled out her phone and started thumbing through events. She paused at an entry, then moved on.

I noticed this opening was missing when I checked the assignment docket. I can’t imagine why you wouldn’t schedule it or what you could possibly be thinking when you chose to ignore one of the hottest tickets in the harbor. Sandra’s eyes narrowed accusingly. Particularly when a sterling invitation was sent to this office and Toby delivered it to you personally.
