The coat was staying in the closet. For Lillian Sauers that small sentence was more than a fact. It was absolute liberation. The long winter, punctuated with two or three unseasonably warm days, was finally giving up the ghost as the sun-kissed air swirled through her open window, warming her.

I love you, spring! Lillian shouted into the breeze, unconcerned about who might hear her seasonal declaration. There was a time when Lillian would have died if she thought anyone noticed her and thought her a little off center stage. Three months of posing for Jonathan Percy changed that fear into excitement. She was more than an unemployed creative writer. She was a model for a working artist. The weekly sessions were doing more than emptying her mailbox of debt notices and filling her fridge with food. They were also giving her a level of confidence and satisfaction she had never felt before.

Of course, when anyone asked what she was doing these days she coyly replied, I’m working in the arts. So, maybe all the fear wasn’t gone. Today was the day she would know for sure. Doc Martins? I’m going to an artist’s studio, not the vegetarian festival at Granola Heights, Lillian countered when her friend struggled to make her case.

It may be the start of spring, but it is still brisk. Do you want to freeze? I think all this job hunting is ruining your mind, chicka. Besides, when you take those jeans off, you’re gonna have to peel them down your legs and he is going to be watching you.
